How to update your Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 to MIUI 9

Xiaomi recently announced the MIUI 9 for its devices and the rollout has already begun. The MIUI 9 is an update to Xiaomi's own custom ROM that runs on the Xiaomi devices. This new update brings a bunch of new features to the table alongside major improvements to performance. MIUI 9 offers a new notification panel, new image editor, split screen, app shortcuts and much more.

Here is how you can update your Redmi Note 4 via the OTA (Over-the-Air)

  • Locate the Update app on your smartphone which is by default inside the Tools folder
  • Open the Update app and you should probably see a new update available
  • Hit 'Update'
  • If you do not see any update, press on the menu button (three dots located on the top right)
  • In the menu options, tap on 'Download Update'

By following these steps the update download should begin. As the update size would be over 1GB it might take some time depending on your internet connection.

How to flash the ROM manually

In case you are unable to see any update or your device keeps showing error while updating, you can follow these simple steps to manually update your Redmi Note 4 to the latest MIUI 9 ROM.

  • Download the necessary files from the following links

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 (SD625 version) fast boot image (1.8GB)

Mi Flash v7.4.2.5 (46.5MB)

  • Extract the downloaded fast boot image which will initially be in .tgz format
  • Power off your device. Now, press and hold the power and volume down keys simultaneously. This will enter your device into fast boot mode.
  • Connect your smartphone to your PC
  • Open the Mi Flash application
  • Hit the 'Select' option and locate the extracted files and hit 'Ok'
  • Make sure the 'Clean All' option is checked and then hit 'refresh'
  • Now tap on 'Flash' and wait until you see a 'success' message

Do note, this might delete all your data so kindly take a backup before heading forward with the process.
