Vivo shows off their new TOF 3D Sensing Technology at the MWC 2018

Vivo to introduce Time of Flight (TOF) 3D Sensing Technology in its upcoming smartphones

Vivo, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer took the stage at the MWC (Mobile World Congress) in Shanghai to showcase their all-new Time of Flight (TOF) 3D Sensing Technology. With the TOF, the company is focusing on improving the AR (Augmented Reality) and human-machine interaction.

The TOF 3D Sensing Technology by Vivo will be able to accurately map objects at a distance of up to three meters and will be able to recognize faces, gestures and movements more accurately. The technology captures around 3,00,000 sensor points to get the results. In comparison, Apple iPhone X uses nearly 30,000 sensor points of Structured Light Technology for its FaceID and Animojis.

Commenting on the announcement, Alex Feng, Senior Vice President of Vivo, said, “From last year’s debut of In-Display Fingerprint Scanning Technology, the recent launch of the truly bezel-less Vivo NEX, to our ground-breaking TOF 3D Sensing technology, we continue to forge ahead and evolve towards the truly intelligent future by opening new ways for the AI to help the consumer. By combining TOF 3D Sensing Technology with AI, we will continue to explore new possibilities for a better future.”

Vivo has optimised and structured the technology that it can easily fit inside a smartphone without demanding much space. The company has also claimed that this technology will not remain a concept for long, as they will soon implement it in one of their upcoming smartphones.

Once Vivo introduces the TOF 3D Sensing Technology, people can use various applications using the phone's AR capabilities to try on different clothes in different sizes in order to see their fitting. Of course, there can be many more uses of the technology and once it is out developers will start working on creating more apps that can take advantage of the technology.
