Meizu 16th First Impressions: Comeback is real?

Meizu has finally launched their latest flagship phone, Meizu 16th with an in-display fingerprint scanner. Here are our first impressions

Meizu 16th features a glass sandwich design

With the launch of the Meizu 16th, the company is making a comeback to the Indian market. The key highlights of the phone include the in-display fingerprint scanner and narrow bezels instead of a notch. We got to check out the phone for some time at the launch event and here are our first impressions.

Meizu 16th: Specifications

Meizu 16th features a 6-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 2160x1080 pixels. It is powered by the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor coupled with Adreno 630 GPU. The dual-SIM handset packs in 8GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage. It runs on OxygenOS based on Google’s Android 9 Pie out of the box. All of this will be backed by a 3,700mAh battery.

As for the optics, Meizu 16th features a dual-camera setup at the back, which consists of a 12-megapixel primary and a 20-megapixel secondary sensor with laser focus and six-led flash. Up front, there is a 20-megapixel selfie snapper with f/2.0 aperture.

It sports a 6-inch AMOLED display

In the era where most smartphone manufacturers are imitating each other, Meizu decided to take the risk and introduce something different. While most smartphones sport a notch up front, Meizu 16th comes with narrower bezels when compared to something like the Samsung Galaxy S9.

In the few minutes we got to spend with the device, we also got to check out Meizu's new FlyMe OS. It is quite inspired by other Chinese OEMs as this one also lacks an app drawer. We also tried its new in-display fingerprint scanner and it looks quite promising. It worked quite similar to the one found on OnePlus 6T.

Meizu 16th comes with six LEDs on the back

Turning the device around shows off the glass back design. Though we got to check out the phone in both Midnight Black and Moonlight White colour variants, we feel that the latter looks way better than the former. The camera setup also looks to be impressive as it comes with laser autofocus and flash that has a total of six LEDs. However, please wait for our review for a final judgement on how the camera performs.

For a price of Rs. 39,999, Meizu 16th is here to compete against the OnePlus 6T and Asus ZenFone 5Z. With a notch less display and an in-display fingerprint scanner, we really feel that this might be the device that is going to help Meizu in getting their hold back in the Indian smartphone market.
