Android Oreo: Top 5 Features, Is it Worth the update?

Today, Google launched the Android Oreo operating system in New York after the United States of America had witnessed the biggest eclipse after a century. During the livestream, it was seen that the company executives went up to the stage and opened up a ball revealing the Android Oreo mascot which can also be seen below. After the unveiling of the mascot was done, the company went ahead and played a video revealing a few details about the operating system. During the video, the Android 8.0 Oreo operating system was called much smarter, faster, powerful and sweeter. Below are our top five reasons as to why you should upgrade to Android O.

Android Oreo

Much More Secure

Android Oreo as an operating system is much more secure than any other version of the Android operating system said Google during the unveiling of the name. The company has achieved this by improved third-party patching, permissions, improving encryption and much more. This might be true as the company has made major improvements in the operating system and is also committed to providing regular security updates.

Picture in Picture Mode

The Picture in Picture mode is a new feature that the company is bringing with Android O. It will allow the users to do any task in a small window during the main task that is running on the screen. This is not it, the users will also be able to resize the small window as per their liking.

Battery Life Improvements with the help of Vitals

The new Android 8.0 Oreo will also help you get better battery life out of your smartphone, this will be due to Google's Vitals initiative. This new initiative will put up caps to what an app can do in the background which Google is calling wise limits. With the help of these limits, the mobile device will be able to not let an app use excessive battery doing meaningless stuff in the background.

Android Oreo

Much More Faster

The company has made a lot of optimizations to the operating system to be fast. These optimizations also include the Vitals initiative of the company. The new Android Oreo system is said to being the fastest Android operating system that has ever been released.

Lower App Sizes

The new Android Oreo operating system doesn't force application developers to include custom fonts with their apps listed in the Google Play Store. This will reduce the sizes of the apps drastically and we might be able to see much more consistent apps in the Play Store. Also to keep in mind that the Oreo operating system also supports the Android Instant Apps feature which will also reduce the size of the apps a user uses as he doesn't need to download the full file.

Android 8.0 Oreo released: Everything you need to know

Google has finally released the new version of Android, and they like to call it the Android Oreo. As Google likes to describe, the Android Oreo is much safer, smarter, more powerful and sweeter than ever.

Android Oreo

So What's Oreo and How did Google get that name?

Oreo is a cookie consisting of two chocolate wafers with a sweet creme filling in between. Google partnered with Nabisco in order to use the name for their latest Android version. Though this is not the first time that the company had got a licence for a name, as they did something similar at the time of Android 4.4 KitKat.

However, we have known about the features of the new version of the operating system, the doubt in everybody's mind was the name. Google did a short live stream on their website just to reveal the name as the features were boosted earlier.

What’s new?

We have known about the features from a long time, thanks to the developer preview. The features packed inside the Oreo update are as follows:

The new version of Android brings some changes which are not visible to any normal user, but are noticeable enough like the background limits for apps to improve battery life, Bluetooth audio improvements, Google Play Protect to help on the security of the smartphone, and other important changes in vital system behaviour for apps. Oreo will also help the phone to boot faster than ever before. It also brings support for the Instant Apps. Some other additions include adaptive notification dots, wider support for picture-in-picture mode, over 60 new emojis, a new look for media notifications and the quick settings menu, a redesigned settings menu, adaptive icons and notification channels.

Should you update?

Yes, according to me, you should definitely update your device to the newest version of Android as soon as you get it. Software updates bring enhancements, improvements and new features to your device. Not to forget, updates also bring the latest Security Patch by Google which helps in keeping your device safe.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 to come with MIUI 9 and 3D facial recognition

Xiaomi, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer, always has a surprise for the people by bringing out some amazing technology to the market. The company was one of the firsts to attempt manufacturing a smartphone with an edge-to-edge display, which was launched last year touted as Mi Mix. Now, as the device got so much of hype, the company is ready to bring the successor of the Mi Mix, the Mi Mix 2. There have been a lot of leaks and rumours lately about the Mi Mix 2.

Recent reports from Weibo, a Chinese website, suggest that the Mi Mix 2 will sport 3D facial recognition. A screenshot shared at Weibo from the Mi Mix 2 shows an outline of a head on the lock screen which gives us a clue that the device wants the user to look at it to unlock. As per the tipster, this new feature will be implemented in the upcoming MIUI 9, sadly it won't be available to every MIUI 9 compatible Xiaomi device.

As far as the specification are concerned, it is being rumoured that the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC coupled with Adreno 540 GPU. The phablet is said to come in two variants, one with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage and the other with 6GB of RAM and 256GB of onboard storage. It is also being said the smartphone will sport a 16-megapixel dual-camera setup at the back with a dual tone LED flash. Up front, the phone will include a 13-megapixel front-facing camera. The phone will feature a 6.4-inch display and will run on Android 7.1.1 Nougat with MIUI 9. All of this will be backed by a 4,500mAh battery.

Xiaomi Mi 5X to get a pure-stock Android variant

The Chinese tech giant, Xiaomi recently launched the Xiaomi Mi 5X which had a name of the flagship but came with the specifications of a mid-range device. The company has been reportedly working with Google to make a debut in the pure-stock Android experience. Xiaomi has always been using a custom UI at top of Android which they like to call MIUI. MIUI got a lot of love as well as hate as for what it is. MIUI is custom UI which surely brings out a lot of features, but at the same time brings bulk too. It slows down the device and consumes lot more RAM than a stock Android device.

Xiaomi Mi 5x

Xiaomi, from the start, has been great at producing great smartphones at a cheap price. Many people have loved the design language and the hardware specifications of the Xiaomi smartphone, but at the same time have wished to have a pure-stock Android experience. Though people can install custom ROMs with nearly stock Android experience, an out-of-the-box pure stock android experience is always welcome.

When it comes to software updates, the company has always been slower than others as it had to update the whole UI as well. But now with the stock Android coming up for the Mi 5X, users will get a seamless experience with latest software updates delivered on time.

If all this becomes a reality and the devices come out by the partnership of Google and Xiaomi, this could bring out some really great smartphones at a cheaper price. The Android One 5X will initially release in the South East Asian markets. There is no word as of when the smartphone will make its way to other countries.

As far as the specifications are concerned, the Xiaomi Mi 5X features a 5.5-inch LTPS IPS LCD display with a resolution of 1080x1920 pixels. The smartphone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chipset coupled with 4GB of ram and 32/64GB of onboard storage. On the camera front, the smartphone sports a 12-meagpixel dual-camera setup at the back and include a 5-megapixel camera at the front.

However, we have no word on what exactly the specification would be for the pure-stock android variant of the 5X, but we expect a similar set of specifications and a similar price.
