Blackberry Mercury at CES 2017

BLACKBERRY MERCURY: UPCOMING FLAGSHIP WITH PHYSICAL KEYBOARD AND ANDROID NOUGAT

CES 2017: Blackberry unveiled its latest flagship device. The device name, specifications and the software has not yet been finalized. You may remember earlier information of three BlackBerry smartphones were leaked. One of them was codenamed BlackBerry Mercury and came with a physical keyboard.

Last year BlackBerry pulled the plug on its own is BB10 in favor of more popular Android OS. It also announced its exit from the hardware market which didn't meant the dead of BlackBerry smartphones. They partnered with TCL so make and distribute BlackBerry smartphones.

For those unaware TCL is american brand which manufactures and sells phones under the name of Alcatel. Last year we saw DTEK 50 and DTEK 60 as products of this partnerships and now we have the third device. This third device like the previous two smartphones will be manufactured and sold by TCL under the name of BlackBerry with BlackBerry enterprise secured version of Android with their suite of DTEK apps and the popular BBM.

Like the DTEK 50 and DTEK 60 this smartphone will be aimed to compete against the flagship devices like the Samsung Galaxy S7, Google Pixel and the Apple iPhone. Although the hardware specifications, software information, price release date and even the name hasn't been confirmed yet but is expected to be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress this February.

Design

Like the original BlackBerry, the BlackBerry Mercury features a physical keyboard. This might be a dream come true for some people. BlackBerry running on Android having a physical keyboard. This is also a touch sensitive keyboard like the BlackBerry Priv. This means you can move your finger on the keyboard to flip between pages and also scroll up and down.

What's unique is the space bar. You will notice the space bar is little bit different. This is because the space bar doubles up as a fingerprint sensor. That's a unique way of implementing it. Instead of extending bezels or adding it at the back, they added it on the space bar.

Like the previous BlackBerry android Devices this also carries the 'convenience key'. There is a 3.5mm Headphone jack unlike the industry trend these days. There is also a USB-C port for faster charging. 

Software

The BlackBerry Mercury will run on Android 7.0 which might change later on. The BlackBerry promised regular updates including Google's security updates like its previous smartphones and we can say they will actually update the devices looking at the previous experience.

The user-interface is almost exactly stock Android, but BlackBerry has a few of its own tweaks to the OS. For example, the overview button shows previous apps in a grid-like layout. You’ll also find pre-installed BlackBerry apps, such as BBM, BlackBerry Hub, and DTEK by BlackBerry. Just like on the DTEK 50 and DTEK 60 and also PRIV.

Can this be BlackBerry's comeback?

BlackBerry although had died as a smartphone maker but still lives on as a software enterprise developer. One of the things a BlackBerry fan loved was the BlackBerry Keyboard. The physical buttons unlike those touch keyboards gave more aesthetic to the design and also increased the speed of typing for those text freaks. 

BlackBerry Mercury with a physical keyboard could be a way for BlackBerry to invoke the physical keyboard trend again in the smartphones. If this happens this will lead to the comeback of BlackBerry as their keyboards were most sort after in their time.

ASUS at CES 2017 showcased its latest lineup of lifestyle innovations in Las Vegas.

ProArt PA32U monitor

The 32-inch ASUS ProArt PA32U is the world’s first professional direct-lit LED 4K UHD HDR monitor, delivering breathtaking levels of detail. It has a full-array LED backlight with the all-new ASUS LED-driving technology, featuring 384 LED zones and capable of a peak brightness of 1,000cd/m2, which offers a wide range of dynamic luminance for a much richer, nuanced image. The use of quantum dot technology provides a wide color gamut, enabling ProArt PA32U to deliver 99.5% Adobe RGB, 85% Rec. 2020, 100% sRGB and 95% DCI-P3 color-space performance for high-end video-editing and production.

An ASUS HiveSpot & HiveDot Mesh Wi-Fi System requires a minimum of three nodes, and up to five nodes can be used if needed. Any unit can act as either a router or a slave node: typically, one unit will be configured as a router — connected to the internet via the gigabit WAN port — and the others as slave nodes located throughout the home. Alternatively, one of the nodes can be connected directly to an existing router via a wired gigabit LAN connection. The slave nodes intelligently organize and extend the wireless network for seamless high-speed Wi-Fi connectivity throughout the home, without the performance and reliability problems often encountered with traditional router/repeater configurations.

Airtel, today announced a special offer under which, it will offer free data for 12 the next months. Which will be worth up to Rs. 9000, to customers who switch to Airtel 4G. With this, customers can now experience India’s fastest 4G network at great prices.

The 12 months offer is available to any customer with a 4G mobile handset that is currently not on the Airtel network. Any customer, including existing Airtel customers, upgrading to a new 4G handset can also avail this offer.

This offer will be available to customer across India starting tomorrow and will close on February 28, 2017.

Customers will get free 3GB data every month till December 31, 2017 with select Prepaid and Postpaid packs under this offer. This free data benefit will be over and above the pack/plan benefits.

For Prepaid users: Free 3GB data with every Rs.345 recharge

Under this offer, customers with any 4G mobile handset who are not on the Airtel network or upgrading to a new 4G device, can enjoy 3GB free data, in addition to the regular pack benefits with Airtel’s Rs. 345 prepaid recharge. The pack will offer free calls - Local and STD – to any network in India plus 4GB data (1GB regular pack benefit + 3GB free data).

The first time free 3GB data benefit can be availed through MyAirtel app and data benefits on subsequent recharges will be instant. The pack benefits will be valid for 28 days and can be availed for a maximum of 13 recharges till December 31, 2017.

For Postpaid users: Free 3 GB data per month with all MyPlan Infinity Plans

Customers with any 4G mobile handset who are not on the Airtel network or upgrading to a new 4G device, will now get 3GB free data per month, with all MyPlan Infinity plans. This is in addition to regular plan benefits which includes unlimited free voice calling - Local/STD/Roaming, generous bundles of data, free SMS and free subscription to Wynk Music and Wynk Movies.

For instance, the Rs 549 Infinity plan will now offer unlimited free calling plus 6 GB data (3GB regular data + 3GB free data) per month along with other pack benefits to customers under this offer. The Rs 799 Infinity plan will offer unlimited free calling plus 8 GB data (5 GB regular data + 3GB free data) per month along with other pack benefits to customers under this offer.

Portronics enhanced its Wellness Series by launching another wearable, Yogg X few weeks ago. The Portronics Yogg X is an improvement to the Portronics Yogg. Tracking exercise levels and sleep duration are some of the things the Yogg X can perform. In addition it also serves as a caller-id and as a watch also.

While on the spec sheet, its same as the Yogg yet so much more different. The Yogg X now has a removable dial and a touch enabled display. The Yogg X is more stylish due to a circular dial rather than rectangular like its predecessor.

The band looks like a fairly common band like in the Yogg and other common fitness trackers. The especially relevant part of the Yogg X is the circular dial rather than the old rectangular dial we are see in the fitness trackers. The band comes in both Red and Black.

The unit itself is removable from the band which means we can change the band to suit or mood for to replace a damaged band.  The Yogg X is extremely slim with a fairly big display in the front and a touch sensitive panel. The touch sensitive panel or the display is not distinguishable from each other hence giving us a clean design.

On the back, there is Portronics branding in the middle along with the charging pins. You will notice a small vertical line somewhere on the boundary which can be used by the user to align it with the band.

Features

The Yogg X can be easily paired with any smartphone with the help of Bluetooth 4.0 almost draining no battery at all. The data is synced with your device and your phone with the help of the Yogg X app. The app is easily available on the iOS and Android. The Yogg X tracks your distance covered as well as footsteps taken in order to calculate the calories burned. The Yogg X also reminds you of your daily goals as well as 6 custom set reminders which are related to sleeping, eating or even taking a medicine. There is also an inactivity alert which reminds you to get moving after a certain period of time. The Yogg X also acts as a beeper for your social messages and calls.

The Yogg X performs really well under heavy duty usage and the battery lasted on an average of 3 days. The device is 24*7 wearable due to its water proof design(IP67). It also has a safety feature so that if the user either if accidentally leaves its phone or it gets stolen the band will notify the user. As a result the band shows Bluetooth disconnection alert quite often. If you leave your phone in our bedroom, you cant walk to the kitchen without the alert going off. The positive side of this is you won't ever forget your phone in a public place. The footstep tracking is almost accurate, considering the other devices in this price range we would say we are quite impressed.

While using the Yogg X, we didn't notice any visible lag or some sort of performance degradation. The 55 mAH charges in less than 30 minutes with a 2 amp charger. The magnetic charge base sticks like charm. The only thing we missed was the ability to see battery level on the Yogg X itself without opening up the app.

Conclusion

The Yogg X is made for someone who tracks his exercises as well as a casual user. It launched at a price of ₹2,499 which is a bit costlier than its alternatives like the Mi Band. Considering the design and performance it is worth it. So, if you are looking for an accurate activity tracker that will keep you updated about your daily activity records and notifications then you can go for it.
