Asus ZenFone Zoom - Is the 3X Zoom worth it?

Asus ZenFone Zoom - In-detail Review

The Asus ZenFone Zoom was launched in India in two colours Black and White though we missed out on the Orange, and that is a big bummer. But, it still is a win for India as we get it before the US for the first time in the Zenfone history. Here are the images that we were provided in the press release -

Asus in India launched its most expensive phone offering ever. Aptly named the Asus ZenFone Zoom, with 3X Optical Zoom which compared to even the highest end phones in the market is what that would stand out as the other phones offer a Digital Zoom which is not good to even start with. Asus priced the phone at Rs 37,999. There was also, a kit pack that would include ZenFlash, and a Tripod with the phone and would cost you Rs 39,999.

Design

The Asus Zenfone Zoom is made out of a single block of aluminium which undergoes 15 processes to make the body then the metal exoskeleton is injected with plastics that are to be used. The phone is 5mm thick on the sides though the rear bulged out camera does add to the bulk of the phone itself.

Zenfone Zoom

The phone itself on the outside maintains the class with premium materials like handmade leather back, metal buttons, gorilla glass 4 screen, etc. The left side has no buttons, the right side has the volume rockers, power button, Camera shutter button, Video Record Button. The top side has the Secondary Noise Cancelling microphone, and the 3.5mm jack. The bottom has the primary microphone and the Micro-USB port.

The back as previously mentioned is made out of premium high quality handmade leather, The back can be removed to reveal a single SIM card slot which is a bummer as Asus has been providing us with Dual SIM slots till now and now they are just offering 1, and the back also contains a microSD card slot. The Camera module is the centre attraction as it occupies most of the back with a 10 element HOYA Lens.

Zenfone Zoom

The feel of the phone is great as it feels premium when held in hand, though the weight is a lot more than my tastes but due to the build quality of the phone it can be forgone, the front is a FHD 5.5inch panel which has amazing colour reproduction, and gives you an awesome experience.

Zenfone Zoom

Display

The Asus Zenfone Zoom comes with a 5.5inch Full HD display with a Corning Gorilla Glass 4 protection. The Display has the new Tru View Technology of Asus that gives you much accurate colours and a better viewing experience. The display has good viewing angles and does not give you colour distortion on any angle. The display even performs well in sunlight and it is fully legible in direct sunlight outdoors. The Movie viewing experience is great as the display changes itself and adapts to the tone of the movie so that long watching hours do not hurt your eyes.

Zenfone Zoom

Inside the Zenfone Zoom

The Asus Zenfone Zoom sports a Intel Atom Z3590 quad core processor which is clocked at 2.5GHz. And to give such a powerful processor justification the phone rocks 4GB of DDR3 RAM. This gave us one of the best performances from a phone that we have seen recently.

Zenfone Zoom

The Phone along with 4GB of RAM comes with a whopping internal storage of 128GB, also you can expand the storage upto 128GB with a MicroSD card. The Zenfone Zoom also has a Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS with AGPS and so on.

Software

The Asus Zenfone Zoom comes with Android 5.0 with the ZenUI and will be soon updated to Android 6.0, The ZenUi has not changed much since the Zenfone 2, the software look is great but the bloatware isn't though you can uninstall it, it still feels like a chore that could have been avoided. Still missing is the fact that Asus is still using a Flashlight app rather than how android provides a widget in the top bar, we also see the addition of the Laser Ruler which let’s you measure the distance from your subject.

Zenfone Zoom

Camera

The Asus Zenfone Zoom comes with a 13MP Primary Camera and a 5MP secondary camera. The Primary Camera has a sensor of 53MP. Now what is unique about the Phone is that it has a 3X Optical Zoom and then further 3X digital Zoom also. Though the market has had its share of optical zoom smartphones, this is the only one that looks like a smartphone. Asus has put inside the Zenfone Zoom a 10-element Hoya lens configuration which uses a dual prism periscope module design to capture light.  The lens arrangement is sideways rather than seeming to come out of the phone and it has been done to keep the phones profile slimmer, but still the phone has a slight bulge on the camera.

The camera comes with all the modes that the Zenfones have ever seen like laser auto focus, manual shooting modes,  super resolution, etc.. The Zenfone Zoom also has the 32 second exposure mode, for using which you will need a tripod, but it surely will be worth it as it gives you stunning shots. The camera of the Zenfone Zoom is simply stunning and ASUS has delivered on the name Zoom.

Zenfone Zoom

And when paired with the The ZenFlash and the LolliFlash from Asus the camera gave us amazing shots, like the shots you would have expected from a DSLR with a professional Flash.

Battery

The Asus Zenfone Zoom rocks a 3000mAh Li-polymer battery, which is not removable, which is the trend we are seeing a lot in the market. It comes with what Asus is calling BoostMaster Technology which can charge the Zenfone Zoom from 0 to 60 percent in 39mins, that is what Asus said but when we tested it out the charging time was even lower than what they said.

Asus Zenfone Zoom BoostMaster

Sound

It simply is one of the best sounding Zenfones available in the market, with the ASUS SonicMaster 2.0 technology it is just simply one of the best sounding phones in the market.

Asus Zenfone Zoom SonicMaster 2.0

Pros -

  • LTE enabled
  • 13 MP pro camera
  • Android Lollipop
  • Corning Gorilla Glass

Cons -

  • Heavy
  • Average battery life
  • Single SIM

Conclusion

Though being the most pricey Zenfone in market ever at 37,999. The Zenfone Zoom does bring a lot to the table on it's plate like the 3X Zoom. But the software is where i get troubled as it has not changed at all and still has tons of bloatware that thankfully you can uninstall. The Camera experience was great and got us some amazing shots. The overall experience was seamless and we found the phone to be really really good. We definitely recommend the Asus Zenfone Zoom.

Final Decision -

Go For it the Asus Zenfone Zoom is really one of the better phones that this year has to offer.

Asus ZenFone Selfie Review

Introduction To The Asus ZenFone Selfie

The Asus ZenFone Selfie is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor clocking in at 1.7 GHz and it sports 3GB of RAM. The phone has an internal storage of 32GB that can be expanded up to 64GB via a microSD card. The cameras are the main feature of this phone, as the Asus ZenFone Selfie packs a 13-megapixel primary camera on both the rear and the front.

The Asus ZenFone Selfie comes with Android 5.0 lollipop and is has a battery of quantity 3000mAh which is removable. It measures 156.50 x 77.20 x 10.80 (height x width x thickness) and weighs 170.00 grams.

The Asus ZenFone Selfie is a dual SIM (Dual GSM Standby) smartphone that accepts Micro-SIMs only. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, FM, 3G, 4G. Sensors on the phone include Proximity sensor, Ambient light sensor, Accelerometer, and Gyroscope, etc..

Look And Feel

The Asus ZenFone Selfie, it's looks are based on the Asus ZenFone 2, and has the same general look and feel. The overall styling is all maintained, making this phone unmistakably part of the series. It's most distinctive part is the 13 Megapixel front shooter, due to which the front camera lens is larger and a bit protruding and the front camera is positioned in the centre. and also both the cameras have dual toned flashes, and interestingly the earpiece is vertical not horizontal like other phones in the zenfone 2 lineup.

Asus Zenfone Selfie

This phone also uses a hybrid-SIM slot, which Samsung has starting doing these days and that means that one SIM slot doubles up as the slot for expandable storage forcing you to choose one or the other, we find this rather unsettling as we would have loved both the SIM Card slots free and a separate MicroSD Card slot.

Asus Zenfone Selfie

As you guys know we love the screen of the zenfone 2 lineup and the Asus ZenFone Selfie has not disappointed us with a screen of 5.5-inch with a resolution of 1080x1920 pixel. Viewing angles, sunlight legibility and colour reproduction are all excellent as well, and also with the software included you can also change the colour reproduction . Like the ZenFone 2 Laser, the as per your liking. Asus ZenFone Selfie is a large phone though, and it has to be classified as a phablet due to its hefty dimensions and screen.

Specifications

The Asus ZenFone Selfie rocks a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 SoC which is not great but does well, and we feel the lack of the Intel Love in this phone. The review unit which we had came with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage.

4G compatibility on both SIM Cards with dual standby, Corning Gorilla Glass 4 protection, support for up to 64GB microSD cards, and a 3000mAh battery. While the device is not all powerful but it gets the work done and that to not feeling sluggish at all, which gets an applaud from our side.

Camera

The main attraction of the Asus ZenFone Selfie is its 13-megapixel front camera, which consists of an f/2.2 aperture and 88-degree wide-angle field of view which is great for selfies. The rear camera has a similar 13-megapixel sensor, with an f/2.0 aperture and the laser autofocus system that we saw in the Asus ZenFone 2 Laser. Both cameras have 5P Largan lenses, Toshiba sensors, blue glass filters, and dual-tone LED flashes.

The rear camera of the Asus ZenFone Selfie is exactly the same as on the Asus ZenFone 2 Laser, and performs identically. The camera shoots very well in indoor settings, while the outdoor shots are pretty much only average compared to the ZenFone 2. The laser autofocus ensures excellently focused shots mostly close-ups. The laser autofocus system is quick and accurate just like expected, ensuring precisely focused shots most of the time.

Let's just take the front camera at the face value, it will only be ever used for selfies hence the name Zenfone Selfie and also the occasional skype calls. So we limited ourselves to only take selfies and that was tough because i never take selfies. Pictures taken were sharp, detailed and vibrant, with accurate colour reproduction and good low-light performance, and combined with the beautification feature it is awesome for selfies. The front flash is a huge benefit as well.

The camera app is the same as the one on the all the ZenFone 2 series, and is well-designed and robust with a great feature set. Notable features are the standard automatic mode, a detailed manual mode, HDR, panorama, smart remove, slow motion, GIF animation and time lapse. The front camera can also use all these modes, and there's a useful selfie panorama option as well. The app has a nifty sliding self-timer, which is an extremely intuitive way to take self-timed shots.

Performance

The Asus ZenFone Selfie is a great phone and consists of at least so much of power that even a power user can also do day-to-day functions very easily. The 3GB of RAM and the Snapdragon 615 SoC keeps the device running smoothly. The interface runs flawlessly, and apps and games load and run without any trouble. We tested game performance with the game Injustice: Gods Among Us and oh my god it was such a smooth gameplay, although the device did heat up a bit, and also their was heavy battery drain.

The device was put through benchmark tests, and results are listed below.

GFXBench - 13 fps

3DMark - 5256 points

AnTuTu - 38,485

Quadrant - 23,993

While at the start we were sceptical about the pricing of the device as ASUS is charging a bit of a premium for the camera technology, but we found that the performance is good enough to justify the higher pricing.

We found the Battery very powerful as it gave us around 2 days worth of usage from 1 single charge. The Selfie also performed well in terms of call quality, signal strength but, the sound performance from the speaker was on the lower side and we did not like it at all.

Pros -

Great Selfie Camera.

Good Battery Life.

Great Closeup shots.

Cons -

Front Camera protrudes a bit.

Plastic Body.

Speaker's not powerful enough.

Bad Focus shots when the object is far.

Final Verdict -

The Zenfone Selfie is amongst the first generation of Selfie Phones from ASUS and they have put in a lot of features and have made a great phone, but a little polishing is needed like putting in better speakers, improve the range of the shots, etc. but still it is a great device in it's category and any person who loves to take selfie shots should get this phone.

Final Words - It is for a Niche Market and does not have wide-spread approach.

It is one of the free PDF Suites out of our Top 5 PDF list, It contains of a ultra-fast operations and a fluent interactive ribbon interface. It has been greatly optimized to be least intensive on your system. But, nothing is perfect in this world and hence Foxit lacks in some aspects like Document signing and encryption. Nevertheless, the free license is what overpowers the minor disadvantages that doesn’t bother most of us. It’s the best pick if you want something good and free at your productive suite.

OnePlus has officially discontinued the OnePlus X worldwide, the smartphone wasn't good enough to sustain and the company took a lot of slack for it. The OnePlus X is the most disappointing smartphone that the company has ever launched. After this, the company took the world by a storm launching the OnePlus 3, 3T, 5, and now is expected to launch the OnePlus 5T worldwide, which will have a full-screen display.

OnePlus might not ever launch another smartphone similar to the X, which focused more on design rather than the actual performance, which the company was famous for. However, now we are seeing the company trying to balance both the design and performance equally.

“Today’s smartphone user strives to find the perfect balance of style and performance. The OnePlus X is a design-centric device - chic and powerful enough to fit any lifestyle,” said OnePlus CEO Pete Lau.

Vikas Agarwal, General Manager - India, OnePlus, added, “We love a rich smartphone experience driven by value, choice and individuality. We are also pleased to announce that it will be our first locally manufactured smartphone.”

OnePlus X

Precision Artwork in Your Hand

The OnePlus X is a work of art. OnePlus has created two separate editions inspired by the exquisite handiwork behind two timeless fields of art - glassware and ceramic.

The OnePlus X Onyx is fashioned from black glass on a metal bezel, giving the phone a premium feel in your hand. Every glass backplate is cut to size and polished repeatedly until it achieves a smooth, glossy, mirror-like finish. Slightly rounded edges give the phone a fluid and seamless feel, and at just 138 gms, it is the lightest and slimmest OnePlus device to date.

OnePlus X

The Ceramic version is crafted in a process totaling 25 days. Starting with a zirconia mold just 0.5 mm thick, the ceramic is fire-baked up to 1480ºC for more than 28 hours before cooling for two full days. Each individual OnePlus X backplate undergoes three meticulous methods of polishing before it is flawless enough for use. Scratch-resistant with a hardness of 8.5H on the Mohs scale and weighing 160 gms, the ceramic build is a feat of engineering and design.

A brushed anodized metal frame etched with 17 elegant microcuts surrounds the OnePlus X. A convenient Alert Slider for easy notification adjustments adorns the left side of the device, with the power button and volume rocker located on the right. Intuitively placed buttons combined with subtle curves and ergonomic lines make the OnePlus X easy and natural to use with one hand.

Capture Your World Faster than Ever

The OnePlus X has a 13MP rear camera combined with f/2.2 aperture, perfect for documenting your unique everyday experiences. Optimized white balance and saturation maintain the integrity of the colors of your photos, and a lightning-fast 0.2-second autofocus with phase detection autofocus (PDAF) -- our fastest camera yet -- means you won’t miss a moment. Shoot in Auto, HDR or Clear Image to perfect your image, or switch to the 8MP front-facing camera with supported Beauty Mode to capture a flawless selfie.

Beauty That’s More than Skin-deep

Combining the Snapdragon 801 processor with Adreno 330 GPU and 3GB of RAM, the OnePlus X is as powerful as it is stylish. The 5” 1080p Active Matrix OLED screen is responsive and incredibly bright in direct sunlight, and the 441 PPI resolution keeps the screen sharp without draining your battery.

Notably, the OnePlus X supports two nano SIMs for more network choices and added convenience for people on the go. Even better, one card slot provides optional expandable storage with your own microSD card, allowing a maximum capacity up to 128GB.

OnePlus X

Personalize Your Experience

OxygenOS, a custom operating system developed by OnePlus, brings a range of unique features and elements to the OnePlus X.

The AMOLED screen, never before seen in a OnePlus device, allows for an ambient display that will wake in duochrome mode to alert you to new notifications. A proximity sensor, enabled by each individual user, also wakes the screen whenever the OnePlus X is brought out of a pocket or bag.

Along with OxygenOS features such as on-screen gestures, an enhanced file manager and custom quick settings, the OnePlus X also brings FM radio to your smartphone. Broadcast your favorite local stations directly from your phone without having to connect to Wi-Fi or consume data with the new OnePlus Radio.

Pricing and Availability

The OnePlus X Onyx will be exclusively available on Amazon.in with an invite starting November 05 at INR 16,999. The limited Ceramic edition will be available with a Ceramic-specific invite starting November 24 at INR 22,999.
