LG trademarks Icon smartphone and Iconic smartwatch, launching soon?

With the recent speculation of LG willing to drop the 'G' from its flagship devices, A new information has surfaced supporting the same. According to the United States, Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), South Korean giant LG has filed patents for the names of LG Icon, LG Aicon and LG Aiconn. Also, they have trademarked the name LG Iconic for a smartwatch. the information was leaked by VentureBeat’s Evan Blass on Twitter.

Big companies like LG often trademark product names in different regions to protect the intellectual property rights of the design. This also serves as the clarification of the fact that these are original ideas. LG Icon and the Iconic could possibly LG's next-generation devices. With LG trying to get rid of the 'G' name for its smartphones, Icon could be a good alternative. This is merely a speculation at this point. Since LG is revamping its marketing strategy to make its smartphone business profitable, there is a high possibility of these smartphones hitting the market later this year.

Unlike others, LG is losing money instead of making money on their smartphone business. It's past smartphones like the LG G5 and G6 have failed to capture the desired market. During this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the company’s Vice Chairman Cho Sung-jin clarified that new smartphone models will arrive only when needed, rather than chasing a fixed timeline.

The Korea Herald reports, Vice Chairman Cho Sung-jin said regarding the LG G7 “We will unveil new smartphones when it is needed. But we will not launch it just because other rivals do. We plan to retain existing models longer by, for instance, unveiling more variant models of the G series or V series”.
