What will be the future of Smart Phones

Smart Phones of the 21st century have become so advanced that they could easily be called 'mini computers'. These handheld wonders of technology are capable of taking photos, recording videos, providing GPS navigation, surfing the web and sending emails with a tap of a finger. Smart Phones successfully combine the functionality of many different gadgets and have even managed to push out certain stand-alone devices from everyday use (e.g entry-level digital cameras). They are fitted with touch screens which improve natural interaction with the user and support a whole array of wireless standards which enable the user to stay online both at home and on the go.

An excellent example of how far these devices have come is the Samsung Galaxy S3. The S3 has a 1.4 GHz quad core processor, up to 2 GB of RAM, 32 GB of flash memory, and a Li-ion 2,100 mAh battery which can be charged wirelessly and power the phone for 900 hours! (n.b. standby mode). If you had listed these specifications to someone just 5 years ago, they would think that you are actually talking about a brand new desktop computer! Modern smart phones are smart enough as is, but you can expand their functionality even further by adding a whole myriad of different mobile phone accessories available on the market.

Bluetooth headsets, all kinds of charging docks/pads, memory cards which add extra storage space, custom skins and smart phone cases, car-mounts for GPS navigation, external foldable keyboards, wireless charging plates, wireless hi-fi speakers and solar chargers, are just the "tip of the iceberg". Nevertheless, the technology relentlessly marches on, and there will always be a space for improvements. Considering that the possibilities of mobile operating systems are virtually endless (because programmers can always add extra code), we could say that the future of smart phones depends on hardware manufacturers and creative designers. So, what lies ahead?

Well, it's not that easy to predict the future, but we can outline some general trends and new technologies which have already started to take shape within the industry.

1. 3D screens and holograms

As the current 2D screen technology reaches its peak with ultra high screen resolutions (e.g. retina display) that surpass the performance of the human eye, the big players in the industry have started experimenting with 3D screens. The LG Optimus 3D and Motorola MT810 spearhead this new trend. Companies like 'MasterImage 3D' have also proposed combining 3D screen with built-in projectors to achieve functional holographic projections. This means that you might be resizing your photos with your bare hands sooner that you think.

2. Built-in projectors

Up until now, projectors were just too big to fit inside a mobile phone. Thanks to miniaturization and other advances, smart phones of the near future should be fitted with mini projectors. Projectors could actually remove the Achilles heel of every smart phone on the market - relatively small display for some applications. Samsung has already proved that the technology is capable of projecting up to 50" at 15 Lumens with its 'Galaxy Beam' feature. This means you'll be able to play video games and watch movies on any flat surface in your home.

3. Augmented reality

Augmented reality is actually an umbrella term for a set of technologies which combine computers with natural human senses (usually sight). This technology is then used to present useful information for improved decision making. For example, you could turn on the camera and point your smart phone down the street to get an information overlay about the nearest restaurants down the street.

4. Flexible screens

Thanks to advances in OLED technology, smart phones of the near future could be fitted with flexible screens which could be folded and unfolded when needed. A flexible screen could allow the user to surf the web on a 21" screen while commuting to work.

Final Fantasy IV

Originally released on the SNES over two decades ago, this classic turned based RPG saw a substantial update when it was revamped and re imagined for the Nintendo DS hand held system with 3D visuals. Shadow Run

A classic series that started in 1994 and eventually found its way to the Xbox 360 and PC is now making its debut on Android devices thanks to a kickstarter drive. With an emphasis on story, this 2D turned based tactical RPG that utilizes 3D models is highly anticipated, not simply because of its name, but also because of the possibility of complex battle systems from the table top version making the jump to this Android version.

 

The Harvest

One of the best games that were previously exclusive to Windows Phone (and Xbox Live Arcade), this action RPG is making the jump to Android, and gaming enthusiasts couldn't be happier. Sporting gorgeous 3D graphics, simple controls, multiple playable characters and a customizable upgrade tree, The Harvest is a game with tons of replay value. Not much different than a modern Gauntlet in a sci-fi setting, this game is sure to please hack-and-slash enthusiasts.

 

Fists of Awesome

Another kick starter funded game, this one originally started out as a “love game” for the creator's girlfriend. That simple game, originally called “I fight Bears” was the video game equivalent of a love letter, attempting to show how strong his love was for his girlfriend. “I fight Bears” was then re purposed into a side scrolling ‘beat them up’ with a wonderfully unique retro style where the player controls a time traveling lumber jack as he searches for his missing family and tries to figure out why previously docile creatures are now after his life.

 

The Other Brothers

This 2D side scroller pays homage to the classic Plumber brother duo of Nintendo fame. Packed with humor and innovation, this could be the best side scrolling adventure of 2013.

BlackBerry Z10 – the latest offering by Smartphone pioneer

Introduction

BlackBerry introduced the new phone, the BlackBerry Z10 to take in charge of the smartphone market. BlackBerry Z10 is altogether a new phone with redesigned architecture, look and feel, leading to a modern and attractive smartphone product. It is packaged with powerful hardware and a modern software platform, the BlackBerry OS 10. The new Z10 has a range of latest apps for download from the BlackBerry app store, developed exclusively for this new software platform.

Design & display

With regards to the design of the phone, the new BlackBerry Z10 phone doesn’t have a physical keyboard and buttons, and sports a swish 4.2” touch screen display. The display features a resolution of 1280 x 768 pixels, packing an impressive pixel density of 356 ppi. The screen size is perfect for single hand use, and is neither huge as some Android models nor too small. This gives a crystal clear display of content, giving an affable experience while viewing pictures and web surfing. With round edges, the Z10 looks quite posh and elegant. The back cover includes the BlackBerry logo, which doubles up as a NFC (Near Field Communication) antenna.

Operating system

What distinguishes the Z10 is its all new BlackBerry 10 OS platform introduced for the first time in this phone. It’s a huge overhaul from the existing BB7 plaform. This gives it a modern functionality and the OS provides an environment for modern apps. The most attractive feature of OS 10 is the gesture based interface. There are a lot of apps inbuilt and thousands of other apps, developed exclusively for BB10 platform, are available to download through the app store- BB world. One of the gesture is when you swipe from up to the right. This exposes you to the BlackBerry Hub which contains a list of all navigable items. This can be considered as the control centre of the phone.  

Camera

One of the most important and vital feature of any smartphone is the camera, and the Z10 is decorated with two cameras- an 8MP rear  facing and a 2MP front facing camera that clicks rapid pictures and captures high resolution pictures.

 

BB Keypad

Talking of the BlackBerry keyboard which has been the trademark aspect of any BB phones, the new Z10 doesn’t disappoint with its virtual onscreen keyboard. The keyboard offers predictive text feature which predicts the text as the user types making it easy and fast to complete the words/sentences. The buttons are also easy to tap.

Performance

The BlackBerry is powered by the 1.5 GHz dual core Qualcomm processor with 2GB of RAM which helps the phone to quickly respond to user commands and gestures. Apps are fast to load, and switching between apps is also fast and efficient. The Z10 phone battery has 1800mAh capacity, and is a powerful enough to last over 8 hours on a single charge (standard video rundown test).

The BlackBerry Z10 phone is a serious competition to the established top line smartphones in the market, and can give them a run for the money.

Ubisoft is now taking on Pirates in the next and due installment of it's Assassins Creed Series, The Assassins Creed 4 | The Black Flag, will be launched in October.

Assassin's Creed 4 | The Black Flag will be set in the age of Pirates

Assassins Creed 4 | The Black Flag follows the last year's game, which was set during the American Revolution and the featured main character called Connor. The new game centers on Connor's Grandfather, a Pirate named Edward Kenway.

Assassins Creed 4 | The Black Flag is expected to feature full naval combat as well as a diving mode, all interspersed with the familiar Assassins Creed trips back to the modern day.

There are reported to be 50 different caribbean locations to explore and developers have said they have focused on making a game that gets moving more quickly than last year's title, which was criticized for it's slow start.

Players will also be able to take to the seas to hunt vessels to board and plunder, gaining riches which can be used to hire a larger crew and upgrade the ship. The game will also feature appearances by famous pirates from the history, including Blackbeard  developers have said.

Windows 8 Keyboard Shortcuts -

Knowing at least some of the Windows 8 keyboard shortcuts will make your Windows 8 experience much more enjoyable. Try to memorize these Windows 8 Shortcut Keys.

 

These are the only special Keys that were specified for Windows 8 other shortcut keys are mostly the same ones as previous Windows Versions.

 

  • Press the Windows Key to open the Start Screen or switch to the Desktop (If Open).

  • Press the Windows Key + D will open the Windows Desktop.

  • Press the Windows Key + . to pin and unpin Windows Apps on the side of the screen.

  • Press the Windows Key + X to open the power user menu, which gives you access to many features like – Device Manager, Command Prompt, etc.

  • Press the Windows Key + C to open the Charms.

  • Press the Windows Key + I to open the Settings, which is the same Settings found in Charms.

  • Press the Windows Key + Tab to show open Apps.

  • Press the Windows Key + Print Screen to create a screen shot which is automatically saved into you’re My Pictures Folder.
