How to extend the battery life of your Android smartphone

Smartphones are getting more and more useful with the introduction of a bunch of new applications. The more we use our smartphones, the more we tend to lose the battery on our device. Here are a few tips and tricks that can help you save some battery on your smartphone for those important scenarios.

1.) Turn off features you don't need

  • Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi uses the radio systems in a smartphone which ultimately pulls down the battery. Whenever you are travelling or you are out at a place where you don't have a Wi-Fi connection, you should prefer to turn off Wi-Fi on your smartphone. Also if you totally rely on your 3G/4G data connection, you should turn off the Wi-Fi to save battery.

  • Bluetooth

With wireless headphones and speakers getting popular, people have started using Bluetooth more often. However, if you leave the Bluetooth on your phone 'On' at all times, it can create a huge impact on the battery life.

  • Mobile Data

Mobile Data is really handy, especially, when you are out of the range of any Wi-Fi connection. Mobile Data uses the 3G/4G connection that drains a lot of battery. So, y0ou should prefer to be on Wi-Fi whenever possible. Also, when you are low on battery and need the little juice for the important calls, you should switch off the Mobile Data.

  • Location Services

Location Services can be one of the main cause in the extreme drainage of your battery. To extend the battery life of your smartphone, you should keep the location services off. you can turn it on back again whenever you need it.

2.) Lesser Sync means Greater Battery Life

  • Head over to Settings > Accounts
  • Here you can turn off the sync for the services you don't want

If you are interested in saving a little more battery life, follow these steps

  • Go to Settings > Accounts > Google
  • Select an account (In situations where the smartphone is synced to multiple Google accounts
  • Here turn off the services you don't use. If this is your secondary account and you only need Gmail, then you can turn off every other service.

3.) Use these Apps

  • Greenify

The first app that comes to my mind when talking about the battery is the Greenify app. Greenify has been on the Google Play store for a pretty long time. The application basically hibernates the applications you don't need. This results in more battery life and a better performance.

  • IFTTT

If This Then That is another popular application available on the Google Play store. In this application, you can create a set of rules. For example, when you walk into your home, the app will automatically turn on Wi-Fi and switch off Mobile Data.

4.) The Display

  • Brightness

Auto Brightness on your smartphone uses a sensor which can drain a lot of battery. Prefer to adjust the brightness of your smartphone manually. Also, when possible dim down the brightness so it can save some battery as well as your eyes from straining.

  • Choose Wallpapers Wisely

Android is a platform that gives the option of a lot of customisations. The operating system also offers something called Live Wallpaper. Yes, these wallpapers do look cool but at the same time, they have a huge impact on your battery. Also, if your smartphone has an AMOLED display, you should prefer to use a wallpaper with more blacks in it. A pure black wallpaper on AMOLED displays can save a lot of battery.

  • Always-on Display

Always-on Display is a really common feature nowadays especially with the smartphones having an AMOLED display. The AOD's do look cool and offer some key information at a glance but they come at a price. The price here is your battery life. Consider turning off the AOD to save some battery.

5.) Battery Saver

Most Android smartphones, stock or skinned, come with a battery saver. This Battery Saver option can be found in Settings > Battery. The battery saver mode can allow you to get a little more battery life for the emergency scenarios. You can also set it to automatically turn on once the phone's battery reaches 15 percent. Some smartphones also come with Ultra Battery Saver modes that disable most features and gives more battery life in return.

Speaking of the Batter Saver, we also recommend you to not to use any battery saver applications from the Google Play store. They do not give you any extra battery life. Rather, they drain down more battery by showing multiple types of advertisements.
