LG trademarks Icon smartphone and Iconic smartwatch, launching soon?

With the recent speculation of LG willing to drop the 'G' from its flagship devices, A new information has surfaced supporting the same. According to the United States, Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), South Korean giant LG has filed patents for the names of LG Icon, LG Aicon and LG Aiconn. Also, they have trademarked the name LG Iconic for a smartwatch. the information was leaked by VentureBeat’s Evan Blass on Twitter.

Big companies like LG often trademark product names in different regions to protect the intellectual property rights of the design. This also serves as the clarification of the fact that these are original ideas. LG Icon and the Iconic could possibly LG's next-generation devices. With LG trying to get rid of the 'G' name for its smartphones, Icon could be a good alternative. This is merely a speculation at this point. Since LG is revamping its marketing strategy to make its smartphone business profitable, there is a high possibility of these smartphones hitting the market later this year.

Unlike others, LG is losing money instead of making money on their smartphone business. It's past smartphones like the LG G5 and G6 have failed to capture the desired market. During this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the company’s Vice Chairman Cho Sung-jin clarified that new smartphone models will arrive only when needed, rather than chasing a fixed timeline.

The Korea Herald reports, Vice Chairman Cho Sung-jin said regarding the LG G7 “We will unveil new smartphones when it is needed. But we will not launch it just because other rivals do. We plan to retain existing models longer by, for instance, unveiling more variant models of the G series or V series”.

We still don't know LG plans with the LG G7 and whether it will be called the G7 or not. Something that is certain is that LG will spend less money on their smartphone business and launch fewer smartphones in order to lower the money spent as they are losing market share.

LG G7 render surfaces, reveals dual front-facing cameras

LG unveiled the LG G6, the first phone with an 18:9 resolution display during Mobile World Congress last year. The G6 is now due for replacement. With the Mobile World Congress about to happen again in less than a month, A render of the upcoming LG G7 has appeared and if legit, it tells us a little about the front of the phone. The LG flagship features an 18:9 resolution display and even smaller bezels than the last year. The render also unveils the dual-camera setup on the front. LG is reportedly waiting to use the Qualcomm's new top-of-the-line Snapdragon 845 chipset, so they might delay the launch of the LG G7.

LG G7 Renders Leak

Last year, LG with the LG G6 had to make a sacrifice and launch the G6 with the previous generation Snapdragon 821 SoC. This was due to a deal between Qualcomm and Samsung that gave Samsung the ability to launch the first phone with the Snapdragon 835 on the market. While, there were rumours that the LG would have to do the same again and use the Snapdragon 835 for the LG G7, more recent speculation disapprove that. It is now rumoured LG will delay the launch of the LG G7 for the ability to put Snapdragon 845 under the hood.

LG recently caused a little ripple in the market by announcing that it wont release any new smartphones in the market unless and until "it is needed," whatever that means. In addition to that, it won't release new models during a certain time period just to match the release dates of its competitors mainly Samsung. The company is also planning to get rid of the 'G' brand name for its flagships. So the next LG flagship might be the LG 7.

ZTE to launch more foldable smartphones like the Axon M in 2018

ZTE, the Chinese tech giant, recently launched the Axon M which immediately gained attention due to its unique feature. The Axon M is one of the first smartphones to sport a dual-display setup. The smartphone surely got a lot of attraction but missed a few things which stopped it from being the best. ZTE's Vice President of marketing Jeff Yee confirmed that the company will soon bring another foldable smartphone with dual-displays.

ZTE Axon M

In an interview with Engadget, Yee said that most people, after looking at the Axon M, wish that the company could eliminate the bezel in the middle. As the Axon M uses hinges to keep both the displays together there is a small bezel shown up front while using both the displays together. Making those bezels go off, users can get a much better and seamless experience while using these displays.

10.or (Tenor) G vs 10.or E: Is it worth the extra money?

10.or (pronounced Tenor) is a new-age smartphone brand by the much popular e-commerce company, Amazon India. The company has been introducing some really great smartphones for the price which has created a tough competition for the budget-oriented smartphones. The 10.or G and E have gotten really popular since they have launched. So, here we compare the two smartphones and see whether the 10.or G is worth the extra money or not.

Specifications

In terms of the specifications, 10.or G is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 626 processor while the 10.or E has the Snapdragon 430 SoC at the heart of it. Both the smartphones feature a 5.5-inch IPS LCD display with a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels. The devices come in two different variants, one with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage while the other one on the G is 4GB+64GB and 2GB+16GB on the 10.or E. Storage on both the devices are expandable up to 128GB using a microSD card. Under the hood, both the smartphones have a 4,000mAh battery powering up the internals. These smartphones run on stock Android 7.1.2 out of the box and will soon be updated to Android Oreo.

Camera

The 10.or E features a single 13-megapixel camera sensor at the back while the G comes with a 13-megapixel dual-camera setup at the back. The dual-camera setup on the 10.or G is not the best implementation in the market as it uses one RGB and one Monochrome sensor. People usually prefer to have a telephoto lens or a wide-angle lens in the secondary sensor. However, the G's camera setup simply outperforms the 13-megapixel sensor on the E. Up front, the Tenor E comes with a 5-megapixel selfie shooter while the G, on the other hand, has a better performing 16-megapixel selfie snapper.

Software

In the software department, the 10.or G and the E are more or less the same. Both the smartphones run on a stock version of Google's Android 7.1.2 Nougat. The smartphones are expected to get the latest Android 8.0 Oreo update soon. However, Tenor has been regular and promising when it comes to software updates. Since the launch of the smartphones, these devices have got 2-3 updates which included Google's latest security patches as well as improvements to the system. The software experience and cameras have gotten better over the updates.

Performance

The 10.or E is powered by the Snapdragon 430 SoC while the G gets a powerful Snapdragon 626 process. Though some users might not notice much difference in performance during daily usage, however, when it comes to gaming or other processor demanding apps, the G will perform much smoother when compared to the E. Also, the Tenor G's higher-end variant comes with 4GB of RAM which will help in a smooth multi-tasking experience.

Verdict

10.or G vs 10.or E back

The 10.or G is definitely worth the money as it outperforms the 10.or E in every segment. Apart from the performance and cameras, the Tenor G also looks and feels better in hand when compared to the 10.or E. The 10.or E is currently priced at Rs. 6,999 for the 3GB+32GB variant while the 3GB+32GB variant on the 10.or G is priced at Rs. 9,999. The roughly Rs. 3,000 price difference here gets you the same amount of RAM and storage but at the same time, it gives you a much better smartphone. However, if your needs are very basic and you do not play many games, then the 10.or E is a great option as you can save a couple of bucks there.

Huawei’s next flagships may bring a DSLR-like camera experience

CES 2018 is going on right now and as usual, there are many big and small discoveries at the event. This time at CES 2018 we had a few big mobile announcements. One of them was the launch of the Huawei Mate 10 Pro in the United States. This was unveiled just a few hours below the keynote.

Huawei CBG CEO Richard Yu, at the end of the keynote, went to great pains talking about the carrier situations in the United States, and the emerging need for the consumers of United States to have more choice. A couple of hours later, guys from Android Authority sat down with Richard Yu to talk about Huawei’s performance in 2017 and the challenges they face as a company in the U.S., as well as the partnerships they’ve struck.

Android authority reports, during the interview, Richard Yu said that the tech and AI integration are the next big battlegrounds and opportunities for all smartphone manufacturers. Specifically, he said that he wants to bring DSLR like focal lengths and zoom to the mobile ecosystem.

A smartphone by Huawei running such a wonderful camera wouldn’t be the first time we’ve seen it on mobile. The Panasonic CM1 and Nokia Lumia 1020 already implemented technologies like that. But those implementations were without the use of AI. Combining this hardware technology with AI capability can make this smartphone the next big thing. Although, it would be interesting to see whether we actually need a DSLR-like experience on a mobile device.

Taking into consideration the past, this smartphone will be in collaboration with Leica and the software might be outsourced. Google's Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL makes the same use of AI to provide the same kind of experience.

It will be interesting to see whether it is as good as Huawei's Richard Yu says it to be.

Is this a return of Nokia’s budget-friendly Asha series?

If you remember the mobile phones of the past, you definitely might remember the Nokia Asha series. This Nokia series was not kind of smartphone, but a smartphone like capability mobile phone. They basically were a budget-friendly series of smartphones. They were touch or touch and type phones with the capability to run WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter like apps on their native Asha OS. But they couldn't do all of the things smartphone flagships of those days could. You can call them not so smart smartphones.

Nokia Asha 501

Last of these phones were launched in late 2014. It is good to presume the series had already seen its grave. But HMD Global might be planning to bring it back to the market.

HMD Nokia Asha patent

LoveNokia.net caught a trademark application passing through the EU Intellectual Property Office with the Asha name. HMD Global filed the application. It was for HMD Global to take control of the Asha smartphone name. Now that the Nokia trademark name and smartphone business is owned by them, it makes sense to own the trademark name too. As Per the EUIPO (EU Intellectual Property Office), the name can be used for a computer software platform used in mobile telephones and smartphones. It can also be used in the case of wireless communications services, namely computer software in mobile telephones and smartphones.

This proves the filing just a license for HMD global to use that trademark name in future Nokia products as they wish. HMD Global is working really hard to bring the Budget friendly Nokia 1 with Android Oreo Go program. As the Asha smartphone name was used for Nokia's budget-friendly smartphone series, we might see more devices under Nokia name running Android Oreo Go. This also brings the speculation that Nokia 1 may be called the Nokia Asha 1 or simply the Nokia Asha on the launch.
