ToTok app accused of spying, now back on Google Play Store

ToTok, Google Play Store, Google

ToTok is once again available on the Google Play Store, after being removed earlier on the count of being used for government spying. However, it is yet to make its comeback on Apple's App Store.

ToTak is a popular smartphone app developed by a UAE based company. It was launched back in 2019 and offered users free calling and messaging services in countries like the United Arab Emirates where internet calling services like Skype, WhatsApp and more are blocked.

Both Google and Apple removed the app from their respective app stores after The New York Times had reported that ToTak allowed the UAE government to track conversations, movements and other details of the people who use the app. To which the UAE Telecommunications Regulatory Authority responded by saying that "the country's laws prohibit any kind of data breach and unlawful interception."

Even though the app is once again been made available in the Google Play Store, Google has listed a number of 'updates' to the app, which include requesting access to permissions and data and a newly designed dialogue to ask authorisation of accessing and syncing your contact list.

In a statement to AFP, Apple said that "ToTok was removed from its App Store pending a review", whereas, Google responded by saying, the app was taken down "for a policy issue."

Patrick Wardle, the security researcher that assisted The New York Times in this report stated, "ToTok was a part of a mass surveillance operation, which provided in-depth insight in a large percentage of the country's population."

ToTok tricked its users into handing over the location and private data access to the app, helping them provide data maps of every user to the government according to Wardle. He said that the app was bolstered by fake reviews, which help it grow in popularity.

Once the deadline to link PAN and Aadhaar is over, all unlinked PAN cards will be treated as inoperative.

The deadline to link your Aadhaar card to your PAN card has once again been extended by the income tax department. The new deadline is March 31, 2020.

The reason as to why you need to link your Aadhaar card to your PAN card is that back in 2018 according to a Supreme Court verdict, the validity of Aadhaar is mandatory not only for filing of income tax returns (ITR) but also for Permanent Account Number (PAN) card.

Once the deadline to link PAN and Aadhaar is over, all unlinked PAN cards will be treated as inoperative, which means that any citizen with an inoperative PAN card will not be able to file income tax returns (ITR).

The income tax department has made two methods available for citizens to link their PAN and Aadhaar: Via the Income Tax e-filing website and by sending an SMS. We detail both the ways in detail below:

How to link PAN with Aadhaar via Income Tax website

  • Open the Income Tax e-filing website.
  • Click on the Link Aadhaar button located in the quick links section of the website.
  • Provide your PAN card number, Aadhaar card number and name according to the Aadhaar card on the page.
  • Select the option of birth month only mentioned, if your Aadhaar card only mentions your birth month and not the full date of birth.
  • check the box asking for your permission to get your Aadhaar details.
  • After this, you will be required to fill in a Captcha code, which can be avoided by requesting for an OTP instead.
  • Now click the 'Link Aadhaar' button, which will start the linking process.

How to link PAN with Aadhaar via SMS

To link your PAN card to your Aadhaar card via SMS, you can send an SMS stating: UIDPAN<12-digit Aadhaar><10-digit PAN> to 567678 or to 56161.

The new Weibo account has its name written in Chinese, which according to Google Translate, translates to Saver Gaming Phone.

Lenovo might be looking to launch a gaming smartphone under its Legion sub-brand soon. The company has set up a new Weibo account for gaming phones under its Legion sub-brand. The approach seems quite similar to Asus with its Republic of Gamers (ROG) sub-brand.

The new Weibo account has its name written in Chinese, which according to Google Translate, translates to Saver Gaming Phone. The account is verified and owned by Lenovo Mobile Communications Technology (Beijing) Co Ltd.

Not much is known about the upcoming smartphone as of now. However, we expect the company to reveal major developments and news about the device via this new Weibo account. As of now, the company has shared random posts about mobile games on the handle.

To recall, Lenovo earlier this year confirmed that it is working on a phone which will be made available in early 2020.

According to reports, the device will either be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ processor or the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor. It will come with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. The device is also expected to feature a full HD+ AMOLED display with a refresh rate of at least 90Hz. However, we cannot confirm any of the reported specifications until the company confirms them.

The gaming smartphone industry is still quite small with only select manufacturers having their smartphones in this industry. The upcoming Legion smartphone will go up against devices from Asus, Black Shark, Razer and Nubia.

The company has also partnered with two Chinese smartphone brands to produce hinges.
