Asus Zenbook 13 (UX331U) Review: Thin and light meets performance

Asus Zenbook 13 UX331U

Asus unveiled their ZenBook 13 a couple of months ago in the country. The Zenbook 13 is a thin and light laptop packing enough power on paper to blow other thin and light laptops out of the water. However, does the Asus ZenBook 13 actually perform as advertised? Find out in our review:

Asus Zenbook 13 Review: Specifications

Asus Zenbook 13 UX331U

Specifications of the review unit we got include a 13.3-inch IPS LCD display with a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels. It is powered by the eighth generation 1.6Ghz Intel Core i5 processor coupled with integrated UHD Graphics 620. The device comes with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD for storage storage.

Asus Zenbook 13 Review: Design

Asus Zenbook 13 looks like a thin and light metal build laptop from a distance. While the thin and light part is pretty much true with the device weighing in at 1.12Kg, the metal build part isn't. The laptop is made out of plastic, with a fancy paint job on it.

Asus Zenbook 13 UX331U

The touchpad is big, but not as big as the one found in similarly priced laptops. In most use cases, you will not find any issue with the sensitivity of the touchpad. However, the laptop when used by one of my colleague, who uses a MacBook Air as his daily driver said that the trackpad is quite irritating and doesn't feel up to the mark.

As for the keyboard, it has good key travel and is very comfortable for long typing sessions, the same was said by the colleague who was complaining about the trackpad.

Asus Zenbook 13 UX331U

Edges of the Zenbook 13 are neatly bevelled giving it a nice minimalist look. Asus has tried to make the bottom mimic the look of the older MacBook Air.

The colour matched rubber shoes on the base keep the laptop in one place. The hinge is also of good quality, but the tilt angle could have been a bit more flexible.

Asus Zenbook 13 Review: Display and IO

Asus Zenbook 13 sports a 13.3-inch full HD (1920 x 1080) IPS display. With the display being non-reflective it doesn't attract fingerprints easily. The laptop also comes with a touchscreen option. The panel gets dim enough for battery saving and bright enough to hurt your eyes in an indoor usage environment when needed. With that brightness range, the laptop can use used anywhere from a dimly lit room to a bright sunlight filled environment.

Asus Zenbook 13 UX331U

Viewing angles of the laptop are quite good, the text is legible even at all angles and in most lighting conditions. The display colours are neither too sharp nor too faded. They appear very natural during the usage.

If you were looking to use this laptop on a daily basis, the touchscreen is something you can skip on, but if you want the ultimate experience that this laptop can provide, a touchscreen might help.

The Harman/Kardon speakers are quite loud, packing good bass for listening to music or watching movies while at home or with a couple of people. The speakers perform better in pop songs and more dialogue-oriented audio than something like an upbeat EDM song. I always prefer to use a pair of headphones, but the standalone speakers here are quite good, that most times I didn't want to use my headphones.

Asus Zenbook 13 UX331U

The IO (Input Output) ports on the Zenbook 13 sport two full-size USB ports, one on each side, an HDMI port, a micro-SD card reader, 3.5mm audio jack, a charging port and a USB Type-C port. Exclusion of a DVD drive and Ethernet port was done to decrease the thickness of the device.

Honestly, in the modern world, I don't personally see a need for a DVD drive so its exclusion won't affect most of the people. Also, WiFi is quite common these days, so the exclusion of an Ethernet port might not be an issue for some, but I would have preferred it.

Presence of only two full-size USB ports does bother me a bit, as both of them will vanish if you decide to use an external mouse and keyboard with the laptop. Presence of the USB Type-C port helps with overcoming all of that.

Asus Zenbook 13 Review: Keyboard and Touchpad

Asus Zenbook 13 sports a chiclet-style keyboard, with three levels of backlighting for usage in a dimly lit room. The keys on the keyboard are flat are have got a nice feel to them. The tactile feedback from the keyboard is great. The key travel is good enough to help you type without any issue for an extended period of time. The sound which the keys make can be a little annoying for some as it is quite loud.

Asus Zenbook 13 UX331U

The touchpad on the Zenbook 13 supports Windows multi-finger gestures, which work right out of the box, but not perfectly. This is the same technology that Microsoft calls precision unit. The presence of such a good touchpad on a laptop designed for portable performance is great. The lower part of the touchpad can be pressed down to register left or right clicks along with the centre part for left clicks. If your workload is mainly mouse related, we suggest you adjust the sensitivity as soon as you purchase the laptop.

Asus Zenbook 13 Review: Performance

Performance is one of the most important specifications to look at while testing any laptop. The Zenbook 13 comes with an 8th Generation Intel Core i5 8250U processor clocked at 1.6Ghz. It comes packed with 8GB of RAM.

Upgradability options are quite limited with this one. For storage, you only have a 256GB SATA3 SSD. There is no space to add a separate internal hard drive. So the only way to get more storage is a bigger SSD, which is a disappointment. The graphics onboard are handled by an integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620 chip. It can be specced up to NVIDIA MX150 graphic card if you wish to go the extra mile.

While things like booting, application launches, and everyday tasks happen quite fast due to the SSD. Opening and working with multiple tabs on Chrome along with multiple applications open in the background, it doesn't sweat.

However, with temperatures rising all the way to 50-degree Celsius in July in India we worry about the thermal performance on heavy workloads.

Asus Zenbook 13 Review: Battery

Writing and looking up websites for reference while listening to music at full volumes with about ten Chrome tabs open and running with downloads in the background. With those being the things I usually do during my workday, the battery lasts approximately eight to ten hours depending on various factors.

Asus Zenbook 13 UX331U

It is worth noting that in my use case, the brightness is set to only 40 percent most of the times. Pushing the brightness to 75 percent and setup to max performance brings down the battery to six to seven hours. However, with the thin and light use case and laptop performs well on lowest performance settings and for indoor use cases and the 50 percent brightness is more than enough.

Overall, the battery performance of the Zenbook 13 considering all the constraints and use cases is pretty good. The charging time of the laptop could a tad better but when a battery works the whole workday at a full charge, you can't expect more.

Asus Zenbook 13 Review: Verdict

Asus Zenbook 13 is a modern computer that looks great and sports a minimalist design. The laptop is not designed for heavy usage and gaming, but it is designed for ultimate portability, which it achieves.

Asus Zenbook 13 UX331U

While the Asus Zenbook 13 can be appreciated for its sturdy build, the plastic body leaves a lot to be desired for. The overall light and thin design combined with a good keyboard, trackpad and features like a fingerprint sensor and good speakers make for a great portable computer. The laptop is a delight to carry in hand, and the lightweight design makes working on the move easy.

Asus Zenbook 13 UX331U

The Asus Zenbook 13 we had for review purposes is priced at Rs. 66,990. For what laptop is worth, the price tag does feel a little bit high. However, when you start looking into thin and light laptop prices, this price starts making sense. To the most, it is like a cheaper Windows alternative to the new Apple MacBook Air. Considering the competition and its performance, the Zenbook 13 by Asus makes for a great thin and light laptop.

Paranoid Android is back in action: Android 9.0 Pie based ROMs for Xiaomi POCO F1, Mi Mix 2S and more

Android Pie
Android 9.0 Pie is Google's latest offering

Paranoid Android is one of the best custom ROMs available in the market. While the development of the Paranoid Android has been on somewhat slow after the release of their Android Oreo variant. Now, the company is back in action with their Android Pie Rom. It already has support for the Xiaomi POCO F1, Xiaomi Mi 8, Xiaomi Mi 6, Xiaomi Mi 5, and the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S. They have also beta releases coming to the Essential Phone, OnePlus 6, OnePlus 6T, and the Moto G5 Plus scheduled to be released soon.

You can download the ROM for the Paranoid Android for the POCO F1 (beryllium), Paranoid Android for the Mi 5 (gemini), Paranoid Android for the Mi 6 (sagit), Paranoid Android for the Mi 8 (dipper), Paranoid Android for the Mi Mix 2S (polaris) now if you want to try them out.

Also Read: How to Install Lineage OS on your smartphone

If you don't own any of these smartphones, but want to try the Paranoid Android ROM, you can still do it. All you need is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 running device with Android Pie. The Paranoid Android team has a project named "QSSI". It basically is a Qualcomm CAF GSI that works on Project Treble-enabled devices with specific chipsets. QSSIs are released by chipset and not by architecture. So you will need Qualcomm 835 chipset only. There is also a catch here. Your device must not sport an A/B style partition. Therefore devices like the OnePlus 5/5T qualify for this.

The existence of CAF is one of the many reasons Qualcomm powered Android devices are more popular in the development community. While the GPLv2 license requires that the vendors release their kernel source, custom ROMs based on AOSP may work without that. This is not a requirement for SoC manufacturers like Qualcomm but they often provide the public part of their chipset specific code for HALs, framework branches, and more. That benefits the developers a lot. Developers can use this to the developer for the platform without knowing how all the new chipset-specific features work. Without that developing a ROM for a device requires studying the chipset features which is not easy and many times not made public.

The company is also claiming to bring support to many Huawei and Honor enabled devices soon.

Redmi by Xiaomi partners with TikTok: Might launch new smartphone on January 10

Redmi TikTok partnership
Xiaomi's Redmi and TikTok partner up to bring a new product on January 10 (Image: Weibo)

Redmi, Xiaomi's sub-brand has announced a partnership with TikTok in order to launch a product on January 10. The Chinese smartphone manufacturer took Weibo as a medium to make the announcement. With the partnership, the company might be looking into the online content market by offering certain hardware and software support.

In case you are wondering why we called Redmi a sub-brand, Xiaomi recently made the announcement that it is no longer a name for their budget device but a new sub-brand. Instead of going with a whole new name, they chose Redmi as people already have trust in the name.

Neither Redmi nor TikTok have revealed much information on the upcoming product. However, according to the recent leaks and rumours, the Chinese firm is planning to launch a new smartphone on January 10 with a 48-megapixel rear camera. The poster above also suggests that the phone will have a water drop notch on the display up front. It would be the first Xiaomi or Redmi phone to come with such features.

Another first for the Redmi series would be the USB Type-C port, according to a hint thrown by Lei Jun. Reports also claim that the phone will come with a gradient glass back design and a 6.3-inch display. It is said to pack in a 3,900mAh battery.

As of now, the piece of news can be taken with a pinch of salt. We will have to wait until January 10 to know more about the device. The company is hosting the launch event in Bejing China and it is set to begin at 2 PM (local time).

Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) Review: Great cameras, good performance and average battery

Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018)
Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) comes with a triple camera setup at the back.

Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) is the company's first smartphone to sport a triple camera setup on the back. The phone does feature a lot of nice hardware and is an overall decent performer. The company seems to have had plans to make the Galaxy A7 (2018) one of the best camera smartphones in the market. However, plans that aren't properly executed are never worth it. In this review we will find out if Samsung was able to execute this plan properly or not.

Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018)

Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) comes with an octa-core Exynos 7885 processor developed by Samsung themselves. This is coupled 4GB/6GB RAM and 64GB/128GB of internal storage depending on the variant you choose to purchase.

The device sports a 6-inch (1080 x 2220 pixels) Super AMOLED display. For the optics, it features a triple camera set up at the back, consisting of a 24 MP, f/1.7 aperture main sensor with PDAF along with an 8 MP, f/2.4 aperture ultrawide sensor and a 5 MP, f/2.2 aperture depth sensor. For selfies, it packs a 24-megapixel sensor with an f/2.0 aperture sensor. All of this is backed by a 3,300mAh non-removable battery.

Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018)
Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) looks quite appealing and well built.

The device sports a polycarbonate back panel that looks and feels like glass. It runs Google’s Android 8.0 Oreo operating system with the company's own Experience 9.0 skin on top. The phone sports dual SIM card slots, a dedicated microSD card slot, 3.5mm headphone jack, a micro-USB port for charging and data syncing and a fingerprint sensor integrated into the power button.

Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) Review: Design

The design of the Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) is really good. The back which is made out of polycarbonate looks and feels like glass proving consumers sturdiness of plastic and the sheen of glass all at once. The device is not flashy like some other smartphones in the market, but it still manages to catch other peoples eyes.

Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018)
The Front with no Notch looks so good

The device sports a 6.0-inch Super AMOLED display with an aspect ratio of 18:9. In true Samsung manner and unlike the trend of 2018, there is no notch on the display, However, the display is stretched a bit to reduce bezels.

The speaker grille, 24-megapixel front camera, and the sensor array are all placed inside of the top bezel. Due to it not sporting a notch, like every other smartphone in this segment, the bottom chin doesn't look out of the place, which in my personal opinion is a good thing.

Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018)
Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) is quite reflective.

Coming to the back, Galaxy A7 (2018) sports a triple camera setup paired with an LED flash aligned vertically on the top left corner. The triple camera unit has a small bump, however, it was expected considering the size of the sensors integrated into the device.

Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018)
Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) right edge, left edge, top edge, bottom edge in order

The right edge consists of the volume rockers and the power button with an integrated fingerprint sensor. The left edge holds the SIM card tray with two SIM card slots and a dedicated micro-SD card slot. The top edge houses a secondary microphone, while the bottom edge houses the primary microphone along with a microUSB port, a headphone jack and the loudspeaker.

Overall, the design of Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) feels pretty good. It's not flashy but still manages to catch other peoples eyes. Integrating the fingerprint sensor inside of the power button according to me is the perfect placement. Implementing a no notch design is also something that makes this smartphone unique providing it symmetry.

Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) Review: Software

Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) runs Google’s Android 8.0 Oreo with the company’s own Samsung Experience 9.0 skin on top. Samsung Experience is as the name suggests is a skin that makes the smartphone experience tailored to what Samsung thinks is the best. It offers a heavily customized Android experience with its icon packs and some additional apps by the company. What is good is while setting up the smartphone you are asked which Samsung Apps do you want to install. These apps can also be uninstalled later if you wanted to do so. There are also a few Microsoft Office apps pre-installed, which cannot be uninstalled, however, these apps are quite handy.

Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018), Software
The Samsung Experience UI is better than the competition

Overall, with its Experience UI, Samsung has evolved a lot from its old days of what used to be the TouchWiz UI. There are many small features that have been added here and there, which make the experience much better than most of the other skins.

Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) Review: Performance

Performance is a major area of concern on any device, the same goes for the Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018). It is powered by an Exynos 7885 processor coupled with a Mali G71 GPU and 4/6GB of RAM. Our review unit came with 4GB RAM and 64GB of internal storage.

Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018), AnTuTu, GeekBench
Here's how the Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) performed on AnTuTu (left) and GeekBench (right)

We ran our usual benchmark tests to evaluate how the Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018)'s performance. On AnTuTu the device was able to score 120905, which is great considering the price and competition.

Also Read: Top 5 reasons to buy an Android phone over an iPhone: Customisations, Notifications and more

On GeekBench it managed to get a single core score of 1524 and a multi-core score of 4419. The performance numbers of the device on paper are great for the value.

While playing light games such as Temple Run and Crossy Chicken, the phone runs flawlessly. Heavy games like Asphalt 9 Legends and PUBG Mobile also run without any hiccup.

Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) Review: Display

Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018)
The display on the Galaxy A7 is good

Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) sports a 6-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 2220x1080 pixels. The brightness levels are able to get super low and immensely high depending on the situation. The colours are great for a smartphone at this price. The sunlight legibility is also great.

Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) Review: Camera

Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) features a triple camera setup at the back. There is a 24 MP, f/1.7 aperture main sensor with PDAF along with an 8 MP, f/2.4 aperture ultrawide sensor and a 5 MP, f/2.2 aperture depth sensor. For selfies, it packs a 24-megapixel sensor with an f/2.0 aperture. The triple camera setup on the back might seem a little overkill but performs quite well.

Images that were taken with the rear camera come out very good. The images have good details and come out very sharp. Due to a dedicated depth sensor and a wide angle lens, it can take perfectly stable shots even on while zoomed in at the maximum capacity.

Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018), Camera Samples
Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) comes with beauty mode enabled by default.

Coming to the front camera, that is a completely different story. The camera app has a smart beauty mode turned on by default, which tries to make you look better. However, this makes the colours more brighter and messes with the white balance. Turning it off solves most of those problems. The details and sharpness on the front camera are okay.

Also Read: Samsung Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy S8 and S8+ to soon get Android 9 Pie based One UI Beta update

Overall, the overkill triple camera setup at the rear provides amazing photos. The details and sharpness obtained from that setup are unbelievable for the price segment. If you want a great camera phone in this segment, look no more.

Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) Review: Battery

Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) is backed by a 3,300mAh battery Li-Po, which easily lasts for a whole day. Charging time with the included charger is less than 2 hours, which is good. According to me, you might want to connect this smartphone to the charger in the night before going to bed so that it doesn't die on you during the day.

Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018), PC Mark, Battery
Pc Mark Work 2.0 (Left) and Battery (Right)

We ran PCMark's Work 2.0 Battery Life test, which subjects the phone to heavy usage and finds out how the battery performs in those conditions. The device yielded a result of 11 hours and 27 minutes, which is quite good in comparison to similar battery capacity smartphones.

Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) Review: Verdict

Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018)
The Overall design of the smartphone is simply great ticking all the boxes

Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) starts at Rs. 21,990, for the 4GB RAM and 64GB storage variant. The bigger 6GB RAM and 128GB storage variant is priced at Rs 25,990. If you are a camera buff, look no more and buy the Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018).

If you don't care about the camera at all and demand only raw performance, there are some better options out there but they don't offer the same amount of after sales support and build quality and brand satisfaction that Samsung devices provide. So this makes the Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) a good choice.

Update: The price of the smartphone was cut just after we reviewed it. It is not available for Rs 18,990 for the base model and 22,990. With that price, the phone is definitely worth the money considering its camera and performance

Apple will be releasing its iPhone XI this year, which according to the company's pattern will be a major upgrade over the previous generation. The device will be launching later this year, however, its first render leak has already shown up online. According to the prototype renders released by OnLeaks and Digit the upcoming device will feature a triple camera setup on the back held in a square placeholder.

The camera setup will include three cameras in a triangle formation along with a hexa LED flash and a secondary noise cancellation microphone. OnLeaks states that the renders are based on EVT (engineering validation test), which means the device design isn't final as of yet. The company is yet to go through its full testing array and this will only be complete after the company successfully performs its DVT (design validation test) and its PVT (production validation test).

The company might end up changing how the device looks design wise. However, the fact that the next iPhone will come with a triple camera setup on the back will not be changing, until and unless something drastic happens.

The odd placement of the camera sensors might be credited to this being the first prototype, with which the company is testing out how a triple camera setup would perform. Or this might mean that the company needs the sensors to have much more distance to each other so that the device can formulate a much more accurate depth disparity map compared to what it can do with two sensors.
