Huawei P20 Pro Review: Does it still manage to stand out?

Huawei P20 Pro sports a notched OLED display up front.

Huawei India launched their flagship smartphone, the Huawei P20 Pro in India last year. The handset comes with a triple camera setup at the back and a notched OLED display up front. With such key features, it aims to compete against the likes of the Apple iPhone XS and Samsung Galaxy S9. Does it still stand out even in 2019? Find out in our full review below.

Huawei P20 Pro Review: Specifications

Huawei P20 Pro sports a 6.1-inch OLED notched display with a resolution of 2240x1080 pixels. The device is powered by the HiSilicon Kirin 970 processor coupled with Mali-G72 MP12 GPU. The dual-SIM handset comes with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage. It runs Google's Android 9.0 Pie-based EMUI 9. All of this is backed by a 4,000mAh battery.

Price: Rs. 49,990

Huawei P20 Pro Review: Design

When it comes to design, Huawei P20 Pro looks quite similar to most flagships smartphones of early 2018. These design features include a glass sandwich design and a notch up front. Huawei took it one step further by including a fingerprint scanner on the front of the phone. However, this was a quite contradictory decision as such bottom bezel eliminates the need for a notch. Notably, the phone also comes with a pre-applied screen protector, which is much appreciated.

The glass back is recitative and a fingerprint magnet.

As far as the placements are concerned, the Huawei P20 Pro sports a triple camera setup at the back with vertical Huawei and Leica brandings. Up front, there is a 6.1-inch notched display where the notch consists of the earpiece, selfie camera, notification LED light and a couple of sensors. The left edge of the device houses the dual-SIM tray whereas the right edge is occupied by the volume controls and a coloured power button. While the top consists of the IR blaster and a secondary microphone, the bottom houses the USB Type C port, speaker grill and primary microphone.

Huawei P20 Pro Review: Display

Huawei P20 Pro
The OLED panel offers punchier colours and deeper blacks.

Huawei P20 features a 6.1-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2240x1080 pixels. Being an OLED panel, it brings in punchier colours and deeper blacks bringing a much better viewing experience when compared to other LCD panels.

Huawei P20 Pro Review: Software & UI

Huawei recently rolled out the Android 9.0 Pie based EMUI 9 update for the P20 Pro. It improved the overall performance of the device and brought in a couple of extra features. While all these features glorified the smartphone, the EMUI skin needs a little more attention. During my time with the device, I noticed a few bugs here and there, which include the camera app and system UI crashing multiple times a day.

EMUI 9 has a ton of customization options.

In a nutshell, EMUI brings in a ton of customisation options and a good amount of features. However, it still needs a little more polishing in order to compete against custom UI skins like OxygenOS on OnePlus and Samsung's recently released One UI.

Huawei P20 Pro Review: Performance

Huawei P20 Pro is powered by the company's own Kirin 970 processor paired with 6GB of RAM. Though the processor is now a bit old, it still holds up pretty well. It is able to handle any task thrown at it. We played games like PUBG Mobile, Asphalt 9: Legends and a few other games during our testing period where we did not notice any sort of lag even in high settings. The frame rates were smooth and the overall experience was overwhelming.

huawei, huawei p20 pro. p20 pro review, price, price in india, specifications

As for the daily tasks, scrolling through the web and switching between multiple applications was quite smooth. However, the UI was sort of a bottleneck here as we did face a few bugs on regular usage.

As for the performance numbers, the P20 Pro managed to get an impressive score of 146657 on AnTuTu benchmarks. In GeekBench, the device secured a respectable score of 1753 in single core performance and multi-core achieved a whopping 5970 points.

Huawei P20 Pro Review: Camera

The camera segment is where the Huawei P20 Pro gets to show off its true potential. The smartphone comes with a triple camera setup on the back consisting of a 40-megapixel primary sensor, an 8-megapixel telephoto lens and a 20-megapixel monochrome sensor.

With no doubt, the Huawei P20 Pro has one of the best camera setups on any smartphone of 2018. The 40-megapixel primary sensor is able to grab enough details that when you edit the photos in software like Lightroom, you end up getting a lot of data to work with.

The telephoto sensor helps in shooting good portrait shots and the 20-megapixel monochrome sensor picks up the extra details. In simple words, they all work together to get some really good shots.

However, if there is one thing that could spoil your experience is the software. Though the camera app is easy to use and navigate, the bugs in EMUI make the experience miserable. We noticed a bug several times where the camera app just stopped working in the middle of shooting a picture. Barring that, it is one of the best camera phones you can buy right now.

Huawei P20 Pro Review: Battery

Huawei P20 Pro battery
The device can last more than a day on a single charge.

Huawei P20 Pro is backed by a 4,000mAh battery. The battery is relatively large and with the optimisations made in EMUI, the phone easily lasts more than a day on a single charge. During our review period, with heavy usage, we were easily able to get through one full working day on a single charge with around 25 percent battery left at the end of the day.

Huawei P20 Pro Review: Verdict

Huawei P20 Pro
The notch is quite huge according to the 2019 standards.

Huawei launched the P20 Pro back in 2018 with a price tag of Rs. 64,999. Over the period of around a year, the phone's pricing has significantly dropped and it is now available for a price of Rs. 49,999. With the new price, the P20 Pro makes a much better deal now. Even with smartphones like Samsung Galaxy S10e and Apple iPhone XR giving it a tough competition, the P20 Pro still manages to stand out and deliver what it was made for.

While the phone comes with really good rear cameras, however, it lacks usability. EMUI has come a long way on the road and has improved drastically when compared to its older versions. However, it still has a few bugs here and there and that is what ends up spoiling the whole user experience.

Xiaomi Mi Smart LED Bulb review: Your first smart bulb is here

xiaomi, mi, mi led bulb, mi smart bulb
Mi LED smart bulb has a lot to offer for Rs. 1,299.

Xiaomi recently launched their own Mi Smart LED bulb in India under a crowdfunding program. The company has now finally brought the bulb to an open sale, which means literally anyone can grab one for just Rs. 1,299 starting today. We have been using one for quite some time now and here's our full review.

Mi Smart LED Bulb: Build and Design

Xiaomi has made the Mi Smart Bulb quite affordable but they did not compromise on the build quality for that. The smart bulb looks quite premium with the grey body and the white glass on top of it. The subtle Mi logo also gives a premium vibe to it. However, the choice of going with an E27 base was not the best, in my opinion. Though new houses are adapting the E27 standards, many people in India still have traditional B22 holders.

Mi Smart LED Bulb: The setup process

The Xiaomi Mi Smart LED Bulb is one of the easiest to set up smart bulbs available. All you need is an internet connection, a smartphone and an app called "Mi Home." Once you turn on the bulb, you just need to open up the application and search for any bulbs. The rest will be taken care of by the application itself. Once the smart bulb is added to your app, you just need to connect it to the Wi-Fi network and you are good to go.

Mi Led bulb, xiaomi, mi
Mi Home app is quite user-friendly and available on both iOS and Android.

Interestingly, the smartphone and the bulb do not need to be on the same network, which means one can even control the bulb when on a 4G network. I installed the bulb in my sister's room and I would just turn it on and change colours to freak her out. While I used it for fun, this feature can be really helpful in cases when you forget to turn off the lights while leaving the house.

Mi Smart LED Bulb: Features

The tiny little bulb from Xiaomi comes with a ton of exciting features. While it can glow like normal bulbs in White or Yellow, it can even change colours to give a great vibe to your room. You can not only play around with the 16 million colour options, but you can also change the brightness of the light. Apart from that, the bulb comes with a Flow Mode, which as the name suggests makes the bulb switch between different colours automatically.

xiaomi, mi smart led bulb, mi led bulb
Mi Smart LED Bulb can be controlled using Amazon Alexa.

One of the more interesting features is the "Sunshine and Sunset." Once you turn on the feature, the light will slowly start glowing in the morning and slowly dim down to turn off in the night. Moreover, the smart bulb can be controlled via voice using Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa. I personally used it with my Amazon Echo Spot and it felt great that I did not need to reach for a switch or my phone to turn on the light. All I need to do is just give the command. Connecting the bulb with a smart assistant really takes it to a whole different level.

Mi Smart LED Bulb: Verdict

Xiaomi's new bulb was initially available at a price of Rs. 999 via a crowdfunding program. Now, the bulb is officially up for grabs at just Rs. 1,299. For that price, the smart bulb has a lot to offer. The setup process was pretty easy and not needing any additional accessories was such a relief.

xiaomi, mi smart bulb
The smart bulb offers over 16 million colours.

The bulb is bright enough to lighten up a medium sized bedroom sufficiently. It also offers over 16 million colours, which will go with any sort of mood. Apart from that, it comes with exciting and useful features like Sunset and even supports for Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa.

In a nutshell, the Xiaomi Mi LED Smart Bulb is one of the cheapest and best smart bulbs available in India right now. If you are looking to enter the world of smart bulbs, the Mi LED Smart Bulb is your first step towards the future.

Mi Band 4 vs Mi Band 3: Should you upgrade?

mi, mi band, xiaomi, mi band 4
Xiaomi Mi Band 4 has just arrived and it might be the right time to upgrade.

Xiaomi has just launched the Mi Band 4 with a bunch of exciting features like a coloured AMOLED display, a voice assistant, NFC and much more. The new smart band is a successor to the Mi Band 3, which is why many of the Mi Band 3 users might be thinking to upgrade. But is it really worth the upgrade? Let's find out.

Mi Band 4 vs Mi Band 3: Display

The display is one of the major factors why one would even consider upgrading to the latest smart band. The new smart band now comes with a coloured AMOLED display, which also allows the band to introduce up to 77 new watch faces. While the new display makes the band more intuitive, it also brings a much better touch screen experience.

Mi Band 4 vs Mi Band 3: Features

While the Mi Band 3 already came packed in with features, the Band 4 brings the game to a whole new level. One of the most interesting features is the NFC. The feature allows for easier connectivity with the smartphone and also brings payment options on board. However, we are still not sure whether the NFC variant will make its way to India or not.

Mi Band 4 vs Mi Band 3: Battery

Xiaomi's latest smart band now comes with a 135mAh battery, which is relatively better when compared to the 110mAh on the Mi Band 3. Despite the upgraded battery, the Mi Band 4 will be able to give a similar battery life due to the new coloured display. Both the smart bands can last for up to 20 days on a single charge.

Mi Band 4 vs Mi Band 3: Verdict

Xiaomi Mi Band 3 is available in India for a price of Rs. 1,999 whereas the latest model starts at CNY 169 (roughly Rs. 1,700). While the pricing will come down to around Rs. 2,000 when it arrives in India, I would say it is a great deal. If you recently purchased a Mi Band 3 and you are happy with it, we would recommend sticking with it for a year and wait for the Mi Band 4. However, if you have used your Mi Band 3 for quite some time now, it might be the right time to upgrade.

Samsung rolls out Night Mode for Galaxy S9 series

Samsung Galaxy S9 Front
Samsung Galaxy S9's camera now gets the much awaited Night Mode.

Samsung launched the Samsung Galaxy S10 series a few months ago and these devices came with something called Night Mode under the camera options. The company has now rolled out the feature for its last year's flagship models, the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus.

Samsung first debuted a Night Mode camera feature with the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S10 series. The feature is here to compete against phones like Google Pixel 3 that come with a feature called Night Sight. These features increase the duration of exposure in order to capture more light. Earlier, the feature would only enable itself when the camera senses a dark environment but with a recent update, the company fixed it on the S10 series.

Just like the Samsung Galaxy S10, the Galaxy S9 will also get the feature on the camera update with the latest update. Since both the smartphones share the same camera hardware, the results are expected to be more or less similar. Apart from the Night Mode, the older flagship is also getting the ability to adjust the intensity of the background blur while using the Live Focus mode on the front camera.

Xiaomi, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer, has just unveiled the much anticipated smart band, the Mi Band 4. It is a successor to the Mi Band 3 and brings tons of exciting changes and improvements over its predecessor. Here are the top five features that will make you excited about the band's India launch.

Coloured AMOLED display

One of the biggest changes to the Mi Band series is the addition of the 0.95-inch coloured AMOLED display. While the Mi Band 3 also got an OLED display, adding colour to it brings more intuitiveness on board. With the new display, Xiaomi has also added up to 77 new colourful dial themes for added personalization.

20 days battery life

xiaomi, mi band, mi band 4
Xiaomi promises over 20 days of battery life.

Xiaomi's smart bands have always been known for their spectacular battery backup. With the Mi Band 4, even after providing a coloured touchscreen display, the company managed to promise a battery life of around 20 days. Xiaomi was able to achieve this by adding Bluetooth 5.0, which not only adds better connectivity but also brings more efficiency.

NFC

While there are still traditional ways to connect to the Mi Band 4, the company has also brought expensive versions of the band with NFC capability. NFC or Near Field Communications allows users to quickly pair their NFC enabled smartphones with the band. Apart from the connectivity, it will also help in digital payments, public transport cards and more. However, this feature might be limited to countries like China.

Voice assistant

Xiaomi introduces the all-new Xiao AI voice assistant with Mi Band 4.

Xiaomi has also added a microphone to the Mi Band 4, which brings voice assistant capabilities to the smart band. Users can now give voice commands to the band and even talk to the new built-in voice assistant called Xiao AI. However, it is unclear if the smart band will now be able to take calls as well or not.

Six-axis high precision accelerometer

In the Xiaomi Mi Band 4, the company has added a new six-axis accelerometer. The sensor will help the band monitor physical activities like cycling, exercise, running, swimming and even walking.
