Instagram removes IGTV button from its app: Here's why

The IGTV app currently has over 7 million downloads only.

Instagram has removed the IGTV button from its home screen as not many users were making use of it. The company launched a standalone IGTV app back in June 2018.

In an interview with Techcrunch, the company said, most people find IGTV videos via their feed, the IGTV channel in Explore, creators profiles and the standalone IGTV app, due to which the separate icon for the feature has been removed.

The IGTV app currently has over 7 million downloads only. This when compared to Instagram's more than 1 billion downloads, does not look that good. However, Instagram users can still see IGTV videos in their feed, which is a good thing.

Creators using IGTV still do not have a way to earn money and monetize their content, which when combined with the low amount of views might lead for creators to be hesitant from creating content for the platform.

To recall, Instagram recently made it easier to post long-form videos to its platform by allowing users to post IGTV videos right from the main app's IGTV feed video uploader.

Apart from this, Instagram in an update recently introduced four new features to share Boomerang Stories: SlowMo, Echo, Duo and the ability to trim the length of Boomerang videos. All of these new features are currently available in the Boomerang composer that is present in the Instagram Stories camera.

Google Android 11 will launch later this year with the company already on work developing it. The company has now even started testing its next operating system version, with a Google Pixel 4 smartphone running Android 11 showing up on Geekbench.

The listing on the benchmarking website shows the operating system's name as Android R. However, we expect that to change to Android 11 at the time of launch, due to the recent change in Google's naming scheme for its mobile operating system.

Even though the Geekbench listing does confirm that the operating system is currently under one of its testing phases. As of now, it does not reveal any additional information regarding the upcoming mobile operating system.

As for the score, the device was able to score roughly the same amounts of points a Pixel 4 running on Google's Android 10 operating system would have.

To recall, Google during the Android 10 launch announced that it would drop using dessert names after Android versions, and would adopt a comprehensive numerical system for all future releases of the operating system. However, before the launch, the operating system was referred to as Android Q in all developer preview beta versions.

Due to this many people are speculating that the Pixel 4 running Android R that showed up on Geekbench is running one of the first beta builds of the upcoming operating system.

Huawei's President for its 5G product line, Yang Chaobin, has said that 5G smartphones priced around $150 (approximately Rs. 10,500) will launch by the end of 2020 or in early 2021.

According to the data in earlier posts, a total of 5 million 5G smartphones were sold in China in December. It is being said that over 20 percent of the were under $290 (approximately Rs. 20,500).

Earlier reports state that these statistics will be spread across the globe quite quickly. As of now, research agencies have suggested that currently 20 percent of all mid-range smartphones sold in China support 5G, due to the fast expansion of the network in the country.

According to the investment banking and financial services firm, Goldman Sachs, manufacturers will ship 200 million 5G enabled smartphones globally in 2020. This is around 20 times more than the total sales figure for 5G smartphones in 2019.

Xiaomi spins off Poco as an independent brand, might do the same with Redmi soon

Poco, Poco F1, Xiaomi, Redmi India, Poco India
This separation has once again feuled the speculation, that the brand is finally going to launch the successor to its Poco F1 smartphone soon.

Xiaomi has finally broken its silence on what it is going to do with its Poco sub-brand. It has announced that the sub-brand will now depart from Xiaomi and will operate as an independent brand.

The Poco sub-brand was launched back in 2018, and till date only has one smartphone in its lineup, the Poco F1. The device was a huge success at the time and is still a perfectly good smartphone to purchase, with specifications rivalling current-gen mid-range smartphones and even beating most of them.

"What started as a sub-brand in POCO has grown into its own identity in a short span of time. POCO F1 is an extremely popular phone across user groups, and remains a top contender in its category even in 2020. We feel the time is right to let POCO operate on its own now, which is why we’re excited to announce that POCO will spin off as an independent brand. Join me in wishing the POCO team the best!" said Manu Kumar Jain in a press statement.

This separation has once again feuled the speculation, that the brand is finally going to launch the successor to its Poco F1 smartphone soon. According to recent leaks and reports, the device will not carry the F2 badge, instead, it will be called the Poco X2.

In other news, Redmi India has changed its Twitter profile picture to a plain white background with the 'Redmi by Xiaomi' logo. The image is accompanied by the words, #Redmi 2020, indicating the brand might be planning to spin it off into a separate brand just like Poco. This will not be new for the brand, considering it has already made the Redmi sub-brand a separate entity in China.

Xiaomi seems to be diversifying its business and spinning off its sub-brands into independent brands, due to the fact it recently stated that it will now focus on developing its core Mi brand in India, with the launch of multiple Mi branded devices. This means that it will not be able to provide that much focus to its sub-brands, however, as independent brands they will able to work separately from Xiaomi.

OnePlus thinks foldable phones are not good enough: The Verge

During a recent interview with The Verge, OnePlus CEO, Pete Lau said that the company has looked into foldable displays, but not pursued it.

OnePlus recently at CES 2020, showcased its first concept smartphone, called the OnePlus Concept One. Many speculated that this will be the first device from the company that will come with a foldable display. However, the company revealed a device in partnership with McLaren that came with an electrochromic glass to hide its rear cameras, when not in use.

During a recent interview with The Verge, OnePlus CEO, Pete Lau said that the company has looked into foldable displays, but not pursued it. This is because the company believes that they have not found any significant advantage or value that is not outweighed by the shortcomings or the disadvantages of the current state of the technology.

He said that the company will only start work on the technology when it is at a level where the device is able to fold crisply without impacting the display where the fold happens. He also states that the current gen devices that are not facing creasing problems are facing other problems like scratching.

To recall, in an earlier interview with The Indian Express, Pete Lau said that the company is not thinking about launching a foldable smartphone as the technology has not demonstrated significant additional value to the user. He also added that, affordability is also something that the company is not sure of. OnePlus will not make a product just for the sake of marketing.

In an earlier interview with CNET, Lau said that the costs of developing a foldable smartphone are high and the value to the end-user doesn't seem to correlate. He said that the foldable products look very different and very interesting, but why OnePlus is not developing one is about the high costs.
