Twitter downvote reply feature now available globally: How to use

Twitter had introduced its downvote reply feature last year to a limited number of its users. Now, the company has started rolling out the feature globally. As of now, the feature is limited to web users, whereas, the company has announced that iOS and Android app users will get the feature at a later date.

Apart from globally rolling out the feature, the company has also announced that it will continue to keep the downvotes on replies hidden. These will just help the platform recognise more relevant comments and make them more visible. Upvotes on replies will continue to be publically visible in the terms of likes.

The micro-blogging platform has stated that during the feature's testing, it has realised that the majority of users clicked the down arrow because the reply was either offensive, irrelevant or both. They also found that "downvoting is the most frequently used way for people to flag content they don’t want to see."

In other news, Twitter is reportedly working on a new feature called Articles. The new Articles feature will allow users to write longer posts, with no character count limit, that is imposed on tweets. The current character count limit imposed by Twitter is 280 characters in a single tweet.

To write longer posts, users earlier had to write tweet threads, which spanned over multiple tweets. With the help of the new Articles feature, it will become more convenient for users who want to post something longer, thus eliminating the requirement of chaining multiple tweets into a thread.

According to reports, the Galaxy S22 Ultra will ship with S-Pen compatibility and will also have a dedicated slot to hold the stylus when not in use, just like the Galaxy Note series. This could be true, considering that reports suggest that Samsung has merged the two smartphone lines, and last year we did not get to see it launch a Galaxy Note series device.

WhatsApp is currently one of the most popular instant messaging apps across the globe. The Meta owned app keeps on releasing new features to keep its users satisfied. Now, the company will reportedly soon allow Android users to migrate their chat history to Apple iOS devices.

According to a new report by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is currently working on a 'move chats to iOS' feature, which will allow users to migrate their chat history from an Android smartphone to an iPhone. However, according to the shared screenshots, it seems like users will only get one chance to start the migration process, and skipping it will simply make the prompt disappear forever.

To recall, WhatsApp back in October first introduced the feature for iOS users to transfer their chats to Samsung and Google Pixel devices.

How will the feature work?

For this feature to work, users will have to download the ‘Move to iOS’ app, once the migration data is selected, the app will create a private Wi-Fi network and search for nearby Android devices. Select the one from which you want to transfer the chat history and enter the security code. After this, the transfer process will begin. Also note, you will have to keep your phones and apps unlocked and opened during the transfer.

WABetaInfo in a tweet had earlier stated, that the iOS to Android transfer feature will only be made available to users running Android 12 and later. This news was later confirmed by Head of WhatsApp, Will Cathcart, who announced that the feature is currently under development and will be coming to both phone ecosystems soon.

Apart from this, WhatsApp is currently working on developing new editing features, which will allow users to draw on images before sending them out. They will be able to pick between three pencil sizes and types. It is also working on a blur feature, which will allow users to blur out specific parts of an image before sending it.

With the work-from-home situation going on all over the globe, we rely on WhatsApp more than ever. The cross-platform messaging application is now not being used just for chatting with friends or making party plans. Instead, it is now also being used for official conversations. Due to this, many people have opted for a second WhatsApp account for their professional needs. While many Android phones allow using a cloned version of the app, iOS does not offer such a feature out of the box.

In case you are wanting to use two WhatsApp accounts on an iPhone, here's how you can do it.

How to use dual WhatsApp accounts on an iPhone

Even though the latest iPhone models now support dual-SIM, Apple has still not provided an option to use two WhatsApp accounts on a single iPhone. Neither does WhatsApp offer an official way to run two accounts under one roof like Telegram. However, you can take advantage of the WhatsApp Business app to use the secondary account.

Before we begin with the process, it is worth noting that the Facebook-owned giant will treat your secondary account as a Business account.

Microsoft poaches top chip architect from Apple: Here's why

Microsoft, mike filippo, Apple, Azure, Microsoft Azure, AWS, Amazon
Microsoft also looking to shift to custom chips, this is threatening to Intel and AMD, which supply the chips for the Azure cloud-computing service. (Image: Pixabay)

While we have been reading news about Meta poaching employees from Microsoft and Apple. Now, news has emerged that Microsoft has poached a prominent chip architect from Apple to help with its chip-making ambitions.

Microsoft has been reportedly been working on designing in-house chips for its data centres. To further its ambitions, according to a new Bloomberg report, Mike Filippo has left Apple and joined Microsoft. The report further claims that Filippo is now working on central processing units (CPUs) for Microsoft.

This move suggests that Microsoft is finally moving forward with its plans to build homegrown chips for servers that power its Azure cloud service. This focus on developing custom chips for servers follows ongoing efforts being made by Alphabet's Google and Amazon's AWS, both of which are the top rivals in the cloud computing services market.

If this report is true, then Microsoft is looking to replace standard server chips designed by Intel in favour of custom chips that perform the way they want.

Why develop custom chips for servers?

Amazon, Google and Microsoft own and operate millions of servers spread out around the world. These servers are data centres that are being used by the companies internally and by their clients too. This is why even a small bump in performance or improvement in cost turns into a lot of money saved.

Amazon already has a good lineup of chips for its AWS unit, including the cost-effective Arm-based Graviton CPU lineup. The price-to-performance ratio of the Graviton chip is massive and uses less power than Intel's server CPUs.

Last year, Google had also hired a top executive at Intel's design engineering group, Uri Frank, who is heading the company's new and growing server chip unit.

Microsoft also looking to shift to custom chips, this is threatening to Intel and AMD, which supply the chips for the Azure cloud-computing service.

Filippo was poached by Apple back in 2019 from Arm, where he worked a decade as lead CPU architect and lead system architect. Prior to Arm, he had worked as a chip designer at both Intel and AMD. According to his LinkedIn profile, he is currently working as chief compute architect at Microsoft.

This is another major blow to Apple in a small-time, considering that it recently lost chip designer, Jeff Wilcox, to Intel. Wilcox helped the company design the custom Mac chips released recently.

Ola Electric puts Ola S1 production on halt to ramp up S1 Pro's production

Ola CEO Bhavish Aggarwal later that day tweeted that the company is offering Ola S1 Pro features to Ola S1 owners via a performance upgrade. (Image: Ola Electric)

Ola Electric has announced that it is halting the production of its Ola S1 electric scooter, and will instead focus on manufacturing the Ola S1 Pro. The company claims that the Pro variant has seen a lot more demand compared to the vanilla Ola S1. Due to the production halt, the company is offering Ola S1 customers a chance to upgrade to Ola S1 Pro.

Ola Electric has sent out emails to Ola S1 customers on January 15, intimating them about the halt in production of the vanilla Ola S1 electric scooter. Stating that the scooter will become available later this year. Apart from this, the mail mentioned that if interested Ola S1 buyers can upgrade to Ola S1 Pro by paying the premium in the next payment window, on January 21 at 6 PM IST.

The email further states that the company will dispatch Ola S1 Pro electric scooters in January and February, and deliveries may take between 10 to 20 days after dispatch, depending on the location of the buyer and regional transport office (RTO) process requirements.

Ola CEO Bhavish Aggarwal later that day tweeted that the company is offering Ola S1 Pro features to Ola S1 owners via a performance upgrade. This means that Ola S1 owners will get all of the features including the Ola S1 Pro's range, hyper mode, and other features. However, take note that the performance upgrade costs Rs 30,000.

While this is good news for Ola S1 Pro customers, vanilla model customers once again have to go through a painful delay. With this news, either customers will have to wait for the end of 2022 to get their Ola S1 or just cough up more money to upgrade to the Pro variant. Moreover, this is even more painful, considering Ola S1 customers will have to wait just like others to put in their order upgrades for the S1 Pro on the scheduled date.
